Western College of Veterinary Medicine's Horse Health Lines Now Online

(Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) – October 16, 2006 – The Autumn 2006 issue of Horse Health Lines, news publication for the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s Equine Health Research Fund, is now online at http://www.ehrf.usask.ca (click on “News”).

Highlights from this issue of Horse Health Lines include:

• extended coverage of a western Canadian couple’s $1.07-million gift to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s equine and companion animal health programs. Plus, find out more details about a new fund raising incentive that could potentially earn an additional $1 million for equine health research at WCVM in the next five years.

• more information about WCVM’s approval from the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) to offer Canada's first accredited residency program in veterinary dentistry.

• vital information about anthrax prevention in Western Canada. After this summer’s record outbreak of anthrax in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, veterinarians are recommending that livestock producers and horse owners who live near affected areas should vaccinate all of their animals for at least three years.

• a research report on PhD student Dr. Tasha Epp’s progress on a predictive model for West Nile virus surveillance that’s based on climate and environmental data collected by NASA-operated satellites.

• a profile of a WCVM alumnus who became Barbaro’s veterinarian, plus an introduction to Mocha — the byproduct of a WCVM research study that has made impressive tracks in the sport of endurance racing.

Published twice a year, Horse Health Lines includes research updates, donor profiles, horse health management articles and other news related to the veterinary college’s Equine Health Research Fund. With the support of Western Canada’s horse industry, the fund annually invests more than $100,000 in equine health research grants, equine fellowships and a summer research program for undergraduate veterinary students at WCVM.

WCVM is a Canadian centre for veterinary education, expertise and research that’s located on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon, Sask. Nearly 400 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled at the college that annually attracts more than $5 million in veterinary research funding from public and private sources.
