Two Companies Join AAEP Educational Partners Program
Equestrian News Release
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) today announced the
addition of IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. and Luitpold Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as
Educational Partners. The Educational Partners program is a group of ten
corporations dedicated to providing resources and education through the AAEP
to veterinarians and horse owners to improve the health and welfare of the
horse.
"We are delighted to join forces with the AAEP to support equine health, as
well as the success of the dedicated practitioners who provide medical
care," said Jonathan Ayers, president and CEO. "This partnership is
consistent with our strategy to provide innovative solutions and technical
advances to our equine customers."
"Luitpold Pharmaceuticals has taken a hard look at its business model the
past 20 months," said Allyn Mann, senior manager at Luitpold. "To stay
competitive and bring value to the equine community, change was necessary
and a new vision was defined. This vision looks outward and centers on the
health of the horse." According to Mann, the next logical step for Luitpold
is to align itself with the AAEP as an educational partner and help support
the key component of their mission statement: to improve the health and
welfare of the horse.
"We are very excited to enter into this partnership and look forward to
working with the AAEP and its members, staff, Executive Committee and board
members," said Mann.
As a committed partner to equine practitioners and their clients, both IDEXX
Laboratories and Luitpold Pharmaceuticals have previously supported the AAEP
through the sponsorship of key events at the Annual Convention.

safety of water and milk. Headquartered in Westbrook, Maine, IDEXX
Laboratories employs more than 3,000 people and offers products to customers
in over 100 countries.
Luitpold Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (<http://www.luitpold.com>) is a subsidiary
of the multi-billion dollar Daiichi Sankyo, a global pharmaceutical company
based in Japan. The U.S. divisions of Luitpold consist of American Regent
Laboratories with their flagship iron product, Venofer® and Osteohealth with
the latest FDA-approved treatment for periodontal disease, GEM 21®.
Luitpold's Animal Health Division developed its joint therapy, Adequan®, as
well as the first FDA-approved, apple-flavored phenylbutazone paste. In
1997, Adequan® Canine was approved for use in dogs with osteoarthritis. This
product has been licensed out to Novartis Animal Health.
Luitpold has a global reach as Adequan® is approved in the major European
countries. Business partners in Europe are Janssen Animal Health and
Intervet. Luitpold's focus is to support the equine practitioner with
educational tools for their clients.
"It is rewarding to have companies of IDEXX and Luitpold's excellence
interested in promoting the importance of equine health care," said David
Foley, AAEP executive director. "We look forward to working together to
benefit the continuing education of equine practitioners and horse owners
for the health of the horse."
The eight other AAEP Educational Partners are: Bayer HealthCare - Animal
Division, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., Fort Dodge Animal Health,
Intervet, Nutrena, Platinum Performance, Pfizer Animal Health and Purina
Mills. It also was announced today that two former Educational Partners -
EQUUS magazine and The Horse: Your Guide to Equine Health Care - have become
Media Partners, which is a new partner affiliation recently started by the
AAEP.
The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in
Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated
to the health and welfare of the horse. Currently, the AAEP reaches more
than 5 million horse owners through its over 9,000 members worldwide and is
actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and
continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.
