Competition Begins at San Angelo First Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena

The first day of competition at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions, held at the First Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas, began with the Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro, and Amateur Derby.

The Derby, featuring the nation’s top 4- and 5-year-old cow horses, is only one go-round, and there is currently a three-way tie for the lead in the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro divisions. Coming in at the end of the first set was Joana Azevedo, of Brazil, who rode her horse Poco Smart Oak, to a score of 143. That high score also secured the lead in the Amateur division by two points. Poco Smart Oak is by Smart Little Lena and out of Poco Smokum Oak.

In the second set, Jerry Alvord on Smartlight Dot Com, and Ashley Good riding Cinnabars Lil Spark, tied Azevedo for the lead with scores of 143. Smartlight Dot Com is by Ill Be Smart and out of Dotta Starlight, and Cinnabars Lil Spark is by Cinnabars Lil Lena and out of Shiners Oakie Val.

The Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Derby will continue Sunday, February 1, with the rein work, and will conclude on Monday with the cow work.

The NRCHA Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions runs through February 8.
