Crawford Rides Cookin Merada to Win Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Open Derby

Todd Crawford, of Blanchard, Oklahoma, rode Cookin Merada to win the Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Open Derby, held during the Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions. Crawford, a National Reined Cow Horse Association Million Dollar Rider, was pleased with the loud over paint's performance. "This is a really good horse, and it's great to win here against this tough competition," he noted modestly.

The pair won the title after marking 143 in the herd work, 149.5 in the rein work, and took second place in the cow work with another 149.5 for a 442 composite. "He really worked well for me today. I was pleased with him throughout the show," noted Crawford of the stallion.

The former NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion took Cookin Merada, by Meradas Money Talks and out of Cookies Cookin, to a third place finish at the 2007 Snaffle Bit Futurity, earning over $72,000. The Circle Y Ranch Open Derby Championship added an additional $12,319 to the 5-year-old's lifetime earnings, and an additional $1,625 for the cow work finish. Cookin Merada is owned by Matacorp Ltd, which is located in Midland, Texas - a short drive from San Angelo.

Along with the bountiful prize money, Crawford won a championship buckle sponsored by Dr. Glen Blodgett and Burnett Ranches, a championship headstall sponsored by All About Cutting and Drenda Chappell, and a Circle Y Derby jacket.

Robbie Boyce, of Jacksboro, Texas, placed second in the Derby on HA Gay Freckles, owned by Mark and Wendy Froman. Boyce piloted the 4-year-old mare, by Steady Tradition and out of Gay Freckles Rio, to a composite score of 441.5. The Reserve Championship check for $9,476 was accompanied by a buckle sponsored by Dr. Blodgett and Burnett Ranches and a Circle Y Derby Jacket. Jason Grimshaw piloted Ima Miss N Texas to the Intermediate Open Derby Championship with a score of 440.5, thanks in part to the high score of 151 in the cow work. Owned by Debbie Roberts of Elm Grove, Louisiana, Ima Miss N Texas is by Yellow Roan Of Texas and out of Ima Miss N You. Grimshaw and Ima Miss N Texas also won third place in the Open division, pocketing $12,388 for the weekend.

Riding his horse Ima Starlight Kid, Zeb Corvin of Canyon, Texas, won the Limited Open title with a 433.5, taking home $3,268. Ima Starlight Kid is by

Bueno Starlight and out of Kids On Stage.

Following the Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Derby Awards Ceremony, a Vendors' Reception was held in the Sale Pavilion to show the NRCHA's appreciation of the vendors in attendance. Wine and light hors d'oeuvres were free to the attendees. "It was a great opportunity for people to mingle with our vendors and see their great products," noted NRCHA Vendor Coordinator Kevin Howell. "These vendors really are a great addition to our show, and we wanted to do something special for them."

Along with sampling great food and wine, attendees were also able to bid on the Rein In Cancer Silent Auction. Products ranging from wormer to artwork have been donated to the cause, and the Silent Auction, which runs through Saturday, February 7, is expected to be a success.

The Fort Dodge Animal Health NRCHA Celebration of Champions, held at the 1st Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas, runs through February 8. The event begins daily at 8am, except for Sunday, which begins at 10am.
