Debbie McDonald Shares her System for Success

America's top dressage competitor, Debbie McDonald, tells her remarkable story in Riding Through, An Olympic Medalist’s Lessons on Life and Dressage, written with veteran equestrian journalist Nancy Jaffer. You'll learn the basis for Debbie's special rapport with Brentina, which has taken them to the heights at the Olympics, the World Equestrian Games and the World Cup finals.

But this book isn't just for the accomplished dressage rider. Those who can benefit from its lessons include anyone who is beginning dressage (or contemplating it), as well as eventers who want to improve their scores in the dressage phase of their competition, or equitation riders who need to ramp up their flatwork.

In the instructional portions of Riding Through, well illustrated with photos and diagrams, Debbie relates her methods for everything from the basics of dressage (including fitness, finding the right horse, developing a good seat and independent aids), all the way through passage, piaffe and pirouette. She even takes you through a Grand Prix test with Brentina!

Accompanying the lesson chapters are Debbie’s “recipes” for the basics and upper-level movements, which serve as handy, practical guides to flip to for easy reference when you are working with your own horse. Plus, Debbie includes a “Questions and Answers” chapter, which features real rider problems and her solutions. Topics range from achieving connection and smoother transitions to how to train effectively without ground help, getting your horse on the bit, the quality of your horse’s gaits, and many more.

Interspersed among the sections on riding and training are chapters detailing Debbie’s story—her horse-crazy childhood, the horrifying riding accident that led her to dressage, and her struggles and triumphs as she rode her way to Olympic, World Cup and World Equestrian Games medals around the world. Illustrated scrapbook-style with photos, many of which are from Debbie’s personal collection, these absorbing biographical chapters serve as a lesson in themselves on the dedication and perseverance it takes to succeed in life, no matter what your goals.
