Doug Williamson/Docs Soula Top NRCHA Derby Open Prelims

After the three preliminary phases of competition at the Paso Robles Event Center, last year’s Champions Docs Soula and Doug Williamson will lead the top 20 Open horses and riders to the NRCHA Open Derby finals on Sunday, June 22.

Williamson, riding Docs Soula for D & S Quarter horses, managed a 654 composite after scoring a 222 in the herd work, 216 in the rein work and a 216 in the cow work. Docs Soula is a 5-year-old stallion by Soula Jule Star and out of Docs Hickory Nut by Doc’s Hickory. The two won the herd work earlier in the week, but Williamson and Docs Soula will still have their work cut out for them, as the preliminary composite scores are thrown out for the clean-slate finals.

In the final leg of the preliminaries, the cow work, two entries, Hip Addams, ridden by Sarah Winters, and RR Fanta Star, ridden by Corey Cushing, tied at 223 to top the Open division. Eighteen-year-old Winters dominated the Intermediate and Limited Open cow work, as well. Her commendable performance secured a place as an Open, Intermediate Open and Limited Open finalist. Hip Addams, by Hickorys Indian Pep and out of Wednesday Addams, is owned by Sarah’s father, Richard Winters of Ojai, California.

Cushing’s high score in the cow work secured his own Open Finals slot on RR Fanta Star, owned by Kokopelli Performance Horses of Phillipsburg, Montana.

Topping the Intermediate composite after the three rounds of preliminary work is Shock And Awe, ridden by Brad Buttrey for Ronald Landskroner of Clovis, California. Shock And Awe is by Shining Spark and out of Starlights Slipper.

The Open finals will take place on Sunday, June 22, at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California. There will be a total of 21 open finalists including ties, 16 Intermediate Open finalists and 6 Limited Open horses to the finals.
