Dubai World Cup Tuesday Workouts

It was a busy Tuesday morning at Nad al Sheba as a number of runners expected to run in the Dubai World Cup card on Saturday took to the track for some final preparations including some timed works. Many horses went a lap around the main dirt track, which is a distance of 2200 meters (about 1 3/8 miles).

Dubai World Cup entrant and defending Horse of the Year Invasor went for a one lap gallop on the main track. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said that the horse is "doing great. Winning the race for (owner) Sheikh Hamdan would be the biggest victory of my career."

Duty Free contender and Santa Anita Handicap winner Lava Man went out for a 1 1/8-mile canter on the dirt and a 2-mile gallop on the turf. "He's a happy camper," said Leandro Mora, assistant to trainer Doug O'Neill. Fellow assistant Carlos Pena added, "The turf is excellent. To tell you the truth, he looks better here when he gallops on the grass than he does back home in California."

Another Duty Free contender from America, English Channel, cantered 1 lap on the main track for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Golden Shaheen entrant Kelly's Landing galloped once around the main track. "He was perfect," said exercise rider Gerry Carwood, who calls the laid-back gelding "gentle giant." On Monday, it was found that the Nad al Sheba starting gate is not deep enough for the large gelding, so a special attachment will have to be installed in order to close the rear door of his starting stall. "He was good in the gate, but it's a little bit tight," Carwood said. "The gate closes on his hock."

Honey Ryder takes on males in Saturday's Sheema Classic. She went 1 round of easy work on tight reins. Ginny DePasquale, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, said of all the Pletcher trainees, "They seemed to handle it nicely."

Bishop Court Hill went out for 1 1/8 miles of easy work in preparation for the Golden Shaheen.

The Japanese Dubai Duty Free contender Admire Moon put in a routine canter on the main track.

Duty Free entrant Linngari went out for a gallop on the main track on Tuesday.

Neil Drysdale's California shipper Obrigado worked out on the turf in preparation for the Sheema Classic.

British sprinter Areyoutalkingtome is entered in the Golden Shaheen and went out for a maintenance gallop. The son of Singspiel is a Polytrack sprint specialist, with 6 wins on the dirt from 5 to 7 furlongs at home. Do not confuse him with the American sprinter with almost the same name.

World Cup entrant Kandidate worked 400 meters (about 2 furlongs) in a slow 30 seconds on the turf. Trainer Clive Brittain said, "I think the big occasion brings out the best in him. I haven't come here to be second, third, fourth, or fifth, I have come here to win."

UAE Derby entrant Bartola galloped 1 1/8 miles on the main track. Carlos Barroso, veterinarian for trainer Juan Carlos Maldotti, said, "She really felt the trip, she lost weight, and wasn't eating up as normal, but she is recovering with each day, and looks a whole lot better now and worked really well this morning."

Golden Shaheen entrant Marchand d'Or went out for a gallop on Tuesday.

Epsom Derby winner and Sheema Classic contender Sir Percy galloped 2 laps around the main track. Trainer Marcus Tregoning said, "His weight is right, and he's had a couple of outings on the turf. I have been thrilled with him and he is looking in great shape. He had niggling problems after the Derby, and an interrupted preparation going into the Champion Stakes at Newmarket last year, when he was a bit disappointing. He's had a much better run going into this race, he's traveled well over here, and settled in well. Martin (Dwyer, jockey) is happy with him. We're up for it!"

Duty Free entrant Daiwa Major galloped 2 laps on the main track.

Sheema Classic entrant Pop Rock cantered 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

Godolphin Mile entrant Dixie Meister galloped 1 1/4 miles on the main track. Trainer Julio Canani said, "I'm just trying to keep him happy and smiling, and I'm trying to do the same thing. He's looking very very good."

Golden Shaheen entrant Agnes Jedi went out for a canter on the main track.

Godolphin Mile entrant Vortex worked 600 meters (about 3f) in 34.20, started work from the 1400 meter (7f) pole and accelerated around the far turn. Trainer Gay Kelleway was unhappy with drawing post 15 in the 16 horse field. She said, "We were badly drawn on his last start here, and he's drawn high again this time too. Having said that, there's usually a good pace on here, so hopefully Johnny (Murtagh) can tuck in and come through horses and we won't be far away"
