Ellen Toon Triumphs Twice in Amateur Owner Hunters

Glen Senk Captures Tricolor in Adult Amateur Division

Wellington, FL March 11, 2007 This weeks hunter competition concluded today at the 2007 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, and Ellen Toon capped the week off with double tricolors in the Over 35 Amateur Owner Hunter division, sponsored by Kilkenny Insurance Agency.

Riding her veteran partner In Disguise, Toon piloted the horse to second and third places over fences on Saturday, and was second under saddle and first in the stake class on Sunday to win the championship.

In Disguise was circuit champion here last year, but he has been on vacation since October of last year, Toon explained. He had a little lameness, so he had some time off, but hes coming back and is better than ever. This is his first show back, so it was really nice that he was champion.

On her second horse Invincible, Toon took the reserve championship in the same division. As a new ride for her, Toon has been working with the 7-year-old Holsteiner gelding to find consistency. In addition, her husband, James Toon, rides the horse in the First Year Green Hunter divisions.

Invincible is new, and this is his first reserve championship here. We just got him at the end of this summer, and hes been getting better and better. He did win a First Year class, but this is the first week Ive won a class with him. Hes been high in the ribbons, and then hell make a green mistake or Ill make one, but basically, hes getting into the swing of things, she commented.

As for her thoughts on the end result, Toon said, Im totally happy, absolutely. I couldnt ask for more, really. Im ever happier just having In Disguise back. Ive had him for a long time since he was 3 and weve done everything together. Hes as good as they get, and for his brother to be next to him, thats awesome.

In the 15 & Under Large Junior Hunter division, Jennifer Waxman and Saloon added another championship to their collection for the season. Jessica Springsteen and Tiziano followed with the reserve championship.

In the 36-50 Adult Amateur Hunter division, which is sponsored by Carol A. Sollak, PA and Illustrated Properties, Section A, the championship was awarded to Glen Senk riding Dynamic. The tricolor topped off an already good week, as Senk was promoted from executive vice president to CEO of clothing retailer Urban Outfitters Inc. The pair placed first and second over fences yesterday and took a fifth place today.

I started riding Dynamic about a year ago and have done well with him. Hes fantastic. Hes been with Rivers Edge Farm (Scott Stewart) since he was a baby, Senk commented. He was great this weekend. Hes always great it is me we have to worry about! This year, hes been champion twice and I think hes ranked pretty high in the circuit.

Senk described Dynamic as being fairly straightforward to ride. He is straight, he looks for the jumps, and he sees the distances himself. Hes incredibly comfortable. The only thing you have to watch out for is that hes a bit of a comedian, and while he jumps the 3-foot height well, its kind of low for him. He can play around a little bit, but hes completely balanced and just a joy to ride.

In addition to Dynamic, Senk also competed his horse True, whom hes had for many years. The pair took a first place yesterday and second and fourth places today. Reserve champion in Section A for the 36-50 Adult Amateur Hunters was presented to Mark Badgley and Brando. Champion in Section B was Ocean View, with Sarah Tait in the irons.

The championship in Section A of the 18-35 Adult Amateur Hunter division went to Arianna Boardman aboard Gatsby, and Tim Boulton piloted Robin Hood to the reserve championship.

The final week of hunter competition at the 2007 Winter Equestrian Festival at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington, FL, will begin on Wednesday, March 14. The first championships of the week will be pinned on Thursday, March 15, in the professional divisions.
