Elvis Wins Aachen Dressage, US Drivers in Medal Contention

AACHEN, Germany - May 20, 2006 - Germany's Nadine Capellman and her 10-year-old gelding, Elvis VA, scored 76.240 percent to win the Uniroyal Grand Prix Special at the World Equestrian Festival on Saturday, two days after their Grand Prix victory led the German team to the team gold in the Nation's Cup.
Finland’s Kyra Kyrklund and Max, riding as individuals, placed second in the Grand Prix Special with a 75.360 percent, the same position as in the Grand Prix. However, Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff and Sterntaler-Unicef finished third with 73.720 percent to improve from their sixth place finish in the Grand Prix. The freestyle ride to music is scheduled for Sunday.
Four of the five judges, including Linda Zang of the United States, placed Capellman first, while an Australian judge, Mary Seefried, placed her fourth in the 30-horse field. Capellman won first place prize money of more than $10,000 for Saturday's victory, which gives her a two-class purse of more than $18,000.
In the cross country phase of the three-stage Nation's Cup four-in-hand driving, Ysbrand Chardon of the Netherlands finished first, but his team was in sixth place out of seven entries. Cones, the final stage, will be competed on Sunday. U.S. driver Chester C. Weber of Ocala, Fla. finished in 5th place, Tucker Johnson of Hobe Sound, Fla. in 13th and Jim Richards of Atlanta, Ga., in 23rd place. The American team is in fifth position overall, but less than five points behind the first-place squad from Belgium.
Four U.S. jumper riders, Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, N.Y. on Authentic, McLain Ward of Brewster, N.Y. on Sapphire, Margie Engle of Wellington, Fla. on Hidden Creek's Perin and Jeffery Welles of Ridgefield, Conn., on Armani will compete in Sunday's Aachen Grand Prix with a total purse of $300,000, the winner receiving almost $100,000.
