Team Equifit runs away with the Central Equine Relay at HITS Saugerties

SAUGERTIES, NEW YORK (August 10, 2008)--The popular Central Equine Relay crowned its winner on Friday night at HITS Saugerties when Team Equifit grabbed the blue ribbon.

"We had a blast," said Equifit owner Alexandra Cherubini, who rode in the anchor spot for the winning squad. "I love night classes. I think that they are so good for our sport."

Joining Cherubini and her mount Equifit Pozitanoon on the victory gallop was Grand Prix rider from Albany, New York's Stepping Stone Farm -- Amy Momrow who rode Equifit Adadeus and reigning Marshall & Sterling League Finals Children's Jumper Champion Michael Hughes who was in the irons aboard Lulu.

Momrow and her mount kicked things off for the Equifit Team, who were dressed in sleek Equifit black and white jackets. The pair went clear in 34.673. Hughes and his horse were the next Equifit team members to go and had the fastest time of the round in 34.179 leaving all the rails up and the fate of the team in the hands of Equifit's poster girl. Cherubini didn't disappoint and went clear in 41.599. Equifit's combined time in the round was 110.451.

"I had a hard act to follow because my two teammates were smoking fast," said Cherubini. "I just wanted to go around and keep all of the rails up and still have a competitive time."

The team of Emily Pope and Seize the Moment, Cathy Cohen and Alicante Du Printemps and Megan Taylor and her mount Double Dutch made it interesting and were only a few seconds off of the pace to grab the red ribbon. Third place went to Hay Fever Farm and riders Neal Shapiro and his mount Jammin , Elisa Shapiro and her ride Vanilla Ice and Caroline Williams who rode Granberg. Each rider went clear and stopped the clocks in a combined time of 120.522.

"It was so much fun to have team spirit," said Momrow. "This sport is so individualized all the time -- it's great to have two other people in your corner rooting for you."

Momrow was not the only Grand Prix rider from Stepping Stone Farm to compete in the relay. Shaine Brooks, who owns Momrow's Grand Prix mount Summer Storm, fielded her own team for the relay and did not get a ribbon, giving the bragging rights to Momrow.

"We both wanted to field our own team," said Momrow. "It's nice to mix the professionals and amateurs and we wanted to even it out a little bit."

Brooks' team Tearin' Out, was sponsored by the popular Saugerties restaurant Vincent's and also included Molly Yake and Kelsey Hart.

The Central Equine Relay is an event in which teams of three riders compete in a Nation's Cup-style class.
