Germany Wins Aachen Super League, United States Second
AACHEN, Germany - May 19 - Germany won its second straight Samsung Super League competition Thursday, and the United States was a bridesmaid for the second time despite a valiant effort by Beezie Madden and her horse, Authentic, who was being treated for a sore foot less than 24 hours before the event.
Germany's three riders went clear in the first of two rounds of competition and did not have to field their fourth riders since the fourth or highest score for a team is discarded. The United States incurred four penalty points in the first round and was alone in second place behind Germany.
The U.S. squad had won here a year ago, but entered the event in second place on the Super League leaderboard after finishing behind Germany in the first of the series of eight competitions in LaBaule, France, two weeks ago.
The German team of Ludger Beerbaum on L'Espoir, Christian Ahlmann on Coster, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum on Shutterfly and Marcus Ehning on Gitania were rock solid in both rounds, going clear over 12 obstacles on a course that was 580 yards, much of the time in steady rain and occasional blustery conditions, before 38,000 spectators.Ehning, who was the anchor for the German team, did not have to ride at all as no other country tied or beat their score. Beerbaum and L'Espoir toppled a rail in the second round and the United States had a chance to tie for the lead even if briefly.
The U.S. squad had gone into the second round carrying only four faults. By the time Lauren Hough on Casadora, Margie Engle on Quervo Gold, both riders from Wellington, Fla., and McLain Ward of Brewster, N.Y. on Sapphire had completed their rounds, they had incurred another four faults. But those faults would have been discarded had Authentic gone clear. Madden of Cazenovia, N.Y. and Authentic incurred four penalty points, however, and Germany retained its insurmountable lead.
The final order of finish was 1. Germany, 2. U.S.A., 3. Britain, 4. Switzerland, 5. Sweden, 6. France, 7. Ireland, and 8. Netherlands.
The third leg of the Super League will be in Rome next week. Before Friday's class, Authentic, who was Madden's mount on the gold-medal winning team at the 2004 Athens Olympics, put a scare into the U.S. team. He was sore on his left hind foot on Thursday. "We took his shoe off and soaked it several times throughout the day," Madden said. "By this morning, he was walking normally and we put the shoe back on." George Morris, Chef d'Equipe for the U.S. team, said he was "never happy to be second, but we're lucky to be doing as well as we are."
The United States is using the early events in the Super League as part of the selection process for the American team that will compete at the quadrennial World Equestrian Games in Aachen, which will be held for over two weeks will begin at the end of August. The Germans are considered the country to beat. Ludger Beerbaum said after Friday's victory that, with German riders winning the World Cup Final in Malaysia last month and the first two of this year's Super League events, trying to win a place on his national team may be tougher competition than the Games themselves.
In other disciplines in contention at Aachen, the United States was leading the nation's cup competition for the four-in-hand driving. The team of Tucker Johnson of Hobe Sound, Fla., Chester Weber of Ocala, Fla., and Jim Richards of Atlanta, Georgia, were five points ahead of Belgium with Germany in third place.
After two rounds, standings in the Samsung Super League are:
1. Germany, 20 points
2. USA, 14 points
3. Switzerland, 7.5 points
4. France, 7 points
4. Britain, 7 points
6. Netherlands, 4 points
7. Sweden, 3.5 points
8. Ireland, 2 point
The next event will be held in Rome on May 25-28.
