Blockbuster Equestrian Spectacle Featuring 49 Horses and 33 Artists Takes Quebec
by Storm on 3rd Montreal Area Visit as Ticket Sales Soar into 11th Week thru July 9
Montreal (Quebec) Canada, May 23, 2006 – Look for Laval, Canada, on the map and you’ll find that the third largest city in Quebec, now drawing fans by the thousands to Cavalia’s White Big Top, is located one bridge north of the bustling metropolis of Montreal. Situated on an island, bordered on the south and east by Montreal, Laval has embraced the grand-scale equestrian spectacle with sold-out crowds since its May 4 opening, as fans from near and far fuel a frenzy of tickets sales. Cavalia, which recently played in Houston and Dallas, marked its 600th show to date in Laval. Brisk ticket sales have already extended Cavalia’s Laval engagement until July 9. If the current momentum continues, additional weeks may be added before a subsequent destination is announced.
“Last summer in Montreal, we were sold out for 10 consecutive weeks. Even when we left, there was still a demand for tickets,” says Normand Latourelle, Cavalia’s president and artistic director. “Of course, we always enjoy the opportunity to come home to Quebec, especially when it means returning to a crowd that welcomed us with such great enthusiasm.”
Since the tour began in August 2003, Cavalia’s cast of 49 horses and 33 artists, has captivated audiences in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, San Diego, Boston, Washington, D.C., Houston, Toronto, and Montreal. A multimedia orchestration of equestrian arts, dance and acrobatics, Cavalia is a tribute to the intertwined history of man and horse.
Accompanied by an original score, the performance showcases the talents of "horse-whisperer" Frédéric Pignon and horsewoman and haute école dressage trainer Magali Delgado, both from the South of France. Their approach to training horses is a unique blend of liberty, respect and understanding. Featured on the May cover of Dressage Today, the philosophy of Magali Delgado and her husband Frédéric Pignon is spotlighted in the accompanying article entitled “Art and Craft.”
Staged inside the largest traveling Big Top in North America, Cavalia’s equine contingent includes an ever-growing assortment of breeds: Lusitanos, Spanish horses, Quarter Horses, Appaloosas, Canadian Horses, Percherons, a Belgian, a Warmblood, and the recent addition of two Friesian colts.
Created by Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of Cirque du Soleil, Cavalia is directed by Erick Villeneuve, with original music by Michel Cusson. Frédéric Pignon and Magali Delgado are the equestrian co-directors, lighting is by Alain Lortie, and sound by Michel Thérrien. Choreography is the work of Alain Gauthier. Costumes are by Mireille Vachon and set design by Marc Labelle.
