Ernie Beal Rides Shesa Mr Dual Pep to Win 2008 NRCHA Amateur Derby

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby, held June 17-22 at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California, crowned its first Derby Champions Friday, June 20.

Riding a mare that he had bred, raised and trained himself, Ernie Beal, of Clovis, California, walked away with the Amateur Championship.

Beal earned the title on Shesa Mr Dual Pep, by Mister Dual Pep and out of Shesa Smoker by Hesa Commander. Beal bought Shesa Smoker from his best friend, who has since passed away, making the victory even sweeter for the father of five.

“I had a great cow, and the horse set up perfect,” Beal said of his cow work. “The cow gods smiled on me today – maybe with a little help from God himself.”

For Beal and Shesa Mr Dual Pep, consistency was the key to the championship. The pair scored a 207 in the herd work, a 207 in the rein work, and concluded with a 211 in the cow work for a composite of 625 points.

“John Ward helped me a little bit, and Ronnie Richard helps me at the shows, but the day-to-day stuff, I do at home, so that makes it even more special for me,” said Beal, who won a check for $1,755. “We were Reserve Champion at the NRCHA Stallion Stakes in the Amateur. This is her fourth show, and she’s been reserve once and champion once, so she keeps getting a little better all the time.”

Finishing as the Amateur Reserve Champion was Natall Melo, of Turlock, California, on Colonel Doc Tucker. The 4-year-old bay gelding is by Mister Jay and out of Genuine Emma Tucker. The pair easily topped the cow work portion of the competition, scoring a 216, and also won the division rein work with a 208.5. But a 199 in the herd work made the pair’s composite a 623.5 – just a point and a half behind Beal. Still, Melo pocketed $1,462 for his efforts.

The Non Pro and Open divisions will compete in the clean-slate finals Sunday, where the Open Derby Champion will receive a check for more than $42,000!
