Experience Wins the Day in Wellington

By JENNIFER WARD

WELLINGTON, Fla., Feb. 1 - Joe Fargis, 59, of Middleburg, Virginia, won the $6,000 1.40m Spycoast NAL Speed Challenge held Friday during the Smart for Life CSI2*, presented by Gold Coast Feed, week three of the CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising.

The 1984 Olympic double gold medalist was aboard Edgar 12 who, at the age of 18, is showing no signs of slowing down. Fargis was riding out of 10th spot in the order of go and, 91 horses later, none had been able to better his time of 67.46 seconds. The track set by course designer Luc Musette of Belgium in the International Arena produced 12 clear rounds with Fargis and his long-time partner, Edgar 12, showing the competition how it's done.

Ken Berkley and Parlay came closest to catching the winning time, clocking in at 68.18 seconds. Alison Robitaille placed next in the order riding Garfield 211 with a time of 69.87 seconds and also took fifth place with Pourquoi for owners Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone. Canadian Olympian Jonathan Asselin of Calgary produced a clear effort to place fourth with Rayana Chiara, a nine-year-old Hannoverian mare owned by his Attaché Stables.

Friday's $6,000 Spy Coast 1.40m Speed Challenge is a member event of the North American League. The NAL offers a year-long Series in six divisions -Children's Jumper, Adult Jumper, Pony Jumper, Open Jumper, Children's Hunter, and Adult Hunter presented by Practical Horseman. The Series includes classes held at hundreds of horse shows across the United States and Canada. Finals for all divisions are held at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, Penn., in October. Riders need not be members of the NAL to compete in the qualifying classes, but only members earn points toward the year-end finals. With the annual membership fee only $30, most riders join in hopes of earning points that may qualify them for a trip to Harrisburg. The Smart for Life CSI2*, presented by Gold Coast Feed, is the third of 12 weeks comprising the CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising and runs through Sunday, February 3, at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The 2008 CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising, attracts the best horses and riders from around the world to Wellington, Fla., and offers more than $5 million in prize money.
