Sandy Ferrell Pilots Cisco to First Year Green Hunter Championship

Wellington, FL February 16, 2007 Hunter competition heated up today despite the brisk weather in the Mogavero Arena, and the First Year Green Hunter divisions, split into two sections, were hotly contested.

In Section A, both Sandy Ferrell and Tim Goguen earned 16 points and were tied for the championship, but the tricolor ultimately went to Ferrell and Cisco because more of their points were from over fences classes. Goguen and Safari, owned by Boggs Farm, took home the reserve championship.

It just so happened that the ribbons were spread out and a different horse won every class, Ferrell commented. It kind of came down to the last class today as to who was going to be champion, and a little bit of luck was on my side.

Cisco, an 8-year-old Warmblood gelding, is owned by Stacey Arani, who rides with Ferrell at Royal Show Hunters and shows him in the Adult Amateur hunters. Ferrell noted that although the horse was a bit out of practice at the beginning of the season, hes getting on the right track and getting in the groove.

She continued, Even though hes a First Year horse, I sometimes think the (fences) are too small for him. I think once we work through some fine tuning and get him in the show ring on a consistent basis, Im hoping (Staceys) going to have a tremendous amount of success with him. Hes fearless, hes very trustworthy, he has a lot of scope; hes a very, very athletic horse. I definitely dont think weve peaked his athletic ability yet. For him right now, its just a game.

In Section B of the First Year Green division, Patricia Griffith and Positano repeated their championship performance for the third time. Reserve champion went to Scott Stewart riding Ovation.

In the USET Show Jumping Talent Search, Jacqueline Lubrano and LB Carte Noir came out on top of Section A. Lubrano, 15, trains with Frank and Stacia Madden of Beacon Hill Farm.

I was called back second from the flat and show jumped nineteenth, Lubrano explained. He was really good. Time was tight, but I got there two seconds under the time allowed, so it was really good. He can be fresh sometimes, but he was great today.

She added that her goals include doing well in the Ronnie Mutch Winter Equestrian Festival Equitation Championship, which she has already qualified for, and competing in the USET Finals for the second year. The pair has been in Wellington since the beginning of January, and although they took last weekend off, they have been consistently in the ribbons.

Hunter competition will continue through Sunday afternoon to conclude Kilkenny Internationale week at the 2007 Winter Equestrian Festival. Divisions that will pin championships tomorrow are the 18-35 Amateur-Owner Hunters, the 16-17 Years Large Junior Hunters, and the 51 and Older Adult Amateur Hunters.
