Garrett Morris and SR Smart Money Win 2008 NRCHA Non Pro Limited World Championship

On Saturday, February 7, Garrett Morris and his horse, SR Smart Money, marked scores of 213.5 in the rein work, and 220 in the boxing, to win the Non Pro Limited World Championship and $3,042 at the 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show, presented by John Deere. The NRCHA World Championship Show is part of the Fort Dodge Animal Health NRCHA Celebration of Champions, which runs through February 8 at the 1st Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas.

Morris, of Mesa, Arizona, has been riding horses all his life, concentrating on reiners. About four years ago he decided to start showing cow horses, and he purchased SR Smart Money, by Count Hickory and out of Sipolena, two years ago. "I saw him show down the fence, and he was awesome. As soon as he was done working the cow, he dropped his head low, and just walked out so calm," said the 21-year-old. "He's a one in a million horse. He's very calm under pressure."

Morris rides with National Reining Horse Association trainer Matt Mills. "I mainly focus on the reining, because I don't really have a cow horse trainer to ride with. I'll probably start moving up and show down the fence now," he said.

Morris also took home a Bob's Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land & Cattle, a Gist custom buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, Rios of Mercedes stock boots, a commemorative World Championship vest, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

John Palleria on Frecklesonmyrooster, and Laura Kiracofe on Tejon Dry Deuce, tied for the Reserve Championship with scores of 432.5. Both took home paychecks for $2,182. Frecklesonmyrooster is by Gallo Del Cielo and out of Miss Solano Playboy, while Tejons Dry Deuce is by Tejons Peppy Doc and out of Dry Rainey.

The Fort Dodge Animal Health NRCHA Celebration of Champions concludes Sunday, February 8, with the World's Greatest Horseman finals. Ten of the nation's top horse and rider combinations will compete for a payout that is expected to exceed $110,000, with the winner pocketing a check for $30,000. The event will begin at 10am with the herd work, and the Opening Ceremonies for the afternoon performance should begin at noon.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2009, is the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for

promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating
