Fourth Annual Intercontinental Sport Horse Auction to Offer Elite Selection of Mounts

Wellington, FL – December 5, 2006 – Nona Garson has spent much of the fall season scouring Europe and North America for a selection of elite horses that she will offer for sale at the fourth annual Intercontinental Sport Horse Auction on January 27, 2007 at The Ridge Farm in Wellington, FL.

The auction is modeled after traditional European sales, and currently Garson is on her third trip to Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands to use her well-trained eye and Olympic-level talents to handpick each prospect. She has seen more than 250 horses this fall and works with a combination of dealers and breeders to tap into a broad spectrum of talent and bloodlines.

“We turn down hundreds of horses for the auction and try to bring in a select few from hunters, jumpers, dressage horses, maybe a few ponies, depending on the quality that I can find…I like to bring in some new faces, so to speak. I like to bring in some young prospects and then some horses that are experienced – suitable for amateurs or juniors. Some of the horses that we bring in have shown through the Grand Prix level, and then some are just young prospects that are just starting – and then everything in between,” Garson explained.

Garson’s scrutiny of each horse does not end once she is out of the saddle: Each prospect has a complete set of pre-purchase x-rays taken no more than three months before the auction and a full set of graded flexions no more than 10 days before the auction by Dr. Brendan Furlong, a veterinarian who has worked with the United States Equestrian Team for more than 15 years. However, if desired, a potential buyer is welcome to bring in his or her preferred veterinarian.

“That’s what, ultimately, is very special about this auction. A person can go see a horse, and they don’t have to spend $1,500 or $2,000 to vet the horse – it’s already been done. So many people fly to Europe, spend thousands and thousands of dollars to pick out a horse, but lo and behold, they find something they can’t live with on the x-rays. I’ve done all that footwork for everyone, and if the horses don’t meet the criteria, they don’t come,” Garson commented. “I’m very fussy, so if I feel that the horse is not suitable or will not do a good job, we turn those away.”

The 2000 Olympic veteran looks for the overall package – a horse that is not too old or too difficult, or has an exceptional talent or prospects, with ages ranging from three to twelve. Garson will offer some American and Canadian horses for sale as well.

Interested parties will be able to view the final group of horses online at http://www.interconsporthorse.com, which will have breeding details, individual specifications and photos. There will be video clips available of each horse at least one week before the auction. Horses can be tried or viewed, by appointment, from Tuesday, January 23, 2007 through the date of the auction, and The Ridge Farm will host a cocktail party and viewing on Friday, January 26, 2007, where each horse will be shown.

The fourth annual Intercontinental Sport Horse Sales – Sport Horse Auction is open to the public. However, it is suggested that attendees register in advance. For more information, please visit http://www.interconsporthorse.com online or contact The Ridge Farm at 732-681-4379.
