George H. Morris Excellence in Equitation Resumes Due by Noon Tuesday, March 11

WELLINGTON, Fla., Mar. 10--Resumes of riders planning the enter the inaugural George H. Morris Excellence in Equitation event are due in the show office at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival by noon Tuesday, March 11.

The class that will be held over three rounds ending in a Final Four in the International Arena under lights is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Friday. March 14.

Invitations are automatically extended to winners prior to March 14 of any 2008 WEF USEF Hunt Seat Medal, ASPCA Maclay, USEF Talent Search or WIHS Overall Hunter Phase and Jumper Phase equitation classes.

Riders from California and several other states have indicated their intention to seek to ride in the competition that is by invitation by the judges panel.

Two panels of judges will adjudicate the competition and a judge will be in the warmup area to insure there is no communication between riders and their trainers or other persons.

The two judging panels are:

George H. Morris, for whom the event is named to honor the horseman who wrote the book on equitation, and reigning Olympic gold medalist Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil and internationally celebrated rider, judge and trainer Melanie Smith Taylor and Brianne Goutal, who only recently graduated from great success as a competitor in such classes to Grand Prix jumping. Olympian Anne Kursinski, who qualified two horses for the short list for the 2008 Olympic Games, will be the judge in the warmup arena. Katie Prudent Monahan who had been named as a judge asked to withdraw when one of her students indicated they would compete in the class.

The first round is judged over fences. Riders chosen by the judges to return for the second round will ride a course designed by the judges.

The final round will be an exchange of horses determined by the judges of the Final Four riders.
