Ginny Burton & Dream Win Low Adult Hunters

WELLINGTON, Fla., Mar. 23--Ginny Burton and Dream were champion of the Low Adult Hunters Sunday at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival presented by Zimmerman Advertising.

Torrential downpours and muddy conditions narrowed the field but Burton, of Wellington, and her six-year-old bay gelding started the morning wining the under saddle. The pair were first in one of their over fences classes Saturday.

Burton bought Dream a year ago and has shown him throughout the WEF circuit in the Low Adult Hunters. Dream was reserve twice in this division and champion during the Littlewood Winter Circuit.

"He is still a baby," Ginny said, "and that is the best word to describe him. He was a good boy yesterday but the conditions today were less than ideal. When we are on, we win. I feel that after all these weeks we are finally getting more comfortable together."

Reserve honors was awarded to the 10-year-old bay gelding, Wentworth, and rider Danielle Baran of Schomberg, Ontario. Wentworth is owned by Emily Pace also of Schomberg and trained by Wayne McLellan of King, Ontario.

Sunday's classes consisted of two over fences and the under saddle. Both over fences classes were won by husband and wife team, William and Karyn Whitely of Wayzata, Minn. William took home the blue ribbon in the first class on the 12-year-old bay gelding, Tonpilibee.

Karyn was awarded the blue ribbon in the second trip over fences on Levon, an 11-year-old chestnut gelding. The Whitely family, consisting of five children that ride as well, train with Morgan and Nora Thomas also of Minnesota.

The Whitely's started riding three years ago. Levon was Karyn's first horse.

"When I started riding with him he hated me and I loved him," said Karyn. "It was a very difficult 18 months. I fell a lot.

"He hates this weather; it unnerves him. The first round he was jumping puddles, the second round couldn't have been better. I am very proud of him."

The blue ribbon in the under saddle was awarded to the 12-year-old dark bay gelding, Night Game, and Mary Tyree of Chicago. Mary and Night Game ride with trainer Katie Kappler also of Chicago.

"I just bought him in January and I'm still learning about him," Mary said. "He is a great mover and very flashy. He is just a very good guy that knows his job and does it well. I am very glad they have this class as an option this year it gives you a chance to show your new horses in a smaller division to get to know them better."
