Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Offers Excellence in High Performance Healthcare

Lexington, KY - February 4, 2009 - Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, one of the top equine veterinary institutes in the country, provides equestrians with a program that specializes in the treatment of show horse athletes. Currently in its third season, the Hagyard Sport Horse program brings the same level of excellent care to high performance horses that the institute has provided for the race horse and breeding industries for decades.

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, located directly across from the Kentucky Horse Park, has practiced in Lexington, KY, for over 130 years. The Hagyard Sport Horse program incorporates comprehensive services, therapies and performance horse management to serve horses that compete across the country on a national level. The program is led by FEI-accredited equine veterinarian Duncan Peters, DVM, MS.

Historically, the institute primarily concentrated on thoroughbred race horses, breeding, and foal care. Over the years their interest and expertise expanded to include sport horse athletes from the disciplines of roping, dressage, show jumping, and eventing.

"Sport horse care differs greatly from that of thoroughbreds," explained Dr. Andy Clark, CEO of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. "The racing industry primarily focuses on young horses. Sport horses are various breeds and older, with medical issues that pertain to their physical maturity and their style of training and competition."

The Hagyard Sport Horse program focuses on four specific areas: Health and Wellness, Nutrition, Incident Treatment and Disease Care, and Training Program Design and Monitoring. Every customized program is developed to minimize injury and optimize performance in sport horses. In addition, Hagyard Sport Horse veterinarians are on-site at major equestrian competitions, and they are available to assist other practices when extra help is needed.

"Everyone can't be everywhere," stated Dr. Clark. "We have created a program that emphasizes a collaborative effort between the client's home-based vets and our on-site veterinarians. The primary care veterinarians do not need to take time away from their practices at home, and they understand that our goal is to help them, not take clients away from them."

"Historically veterinarians move into a marketplace like gladiators," Dr. Clark said. "We don't try to steal clients when we are at shows. We create a line of communication with the client's primary veterinarian at home and discuss treatment options, forwarding images and information. When the horse comes home, the vet has a thorough understanding of what has taken place and is able to maintain the same treatment program."

"Every successful horse has a team behind it, which often includes multiple veterinarians, trainers, and a good farrier," he added. "We would like to be a part of that team."

The well-educated staff at the institute is composed of over 60 experienced veterinarians, with 12 board certifications in specialty areas of Medicine, Surgery and Theriogenology. The institute's state-of-the-art facility offers 12 Digital Radiology systems, Nuclear Scintigraphy, a high speed treadmill, an on-site laboratory, an on-site pharmacy, full surgical services, 24-hour ambulance and emergency services, Hyperbaric Medicine, and a Siemens 1.5 Tesla Espree "open" MRI.
