Positive weekend for Halliday at Aston-le-Walls

Three day eventer and racing driver Liz Halliday enjoyed another positive weekend at the Aston-le-Walls Horse Trials as her horses Oscar, Fox and Donovan continued to show progress at the Northamptonshire venue.

Oscar competed in only his second ever Advanced level event and just missed out on a possible top-five placing after a slight misjudgement during the Cross Country phase meant a run out and 20 penalty points. Previously, he had been ranked third after dressage and jumped clear in the Show Jumping.

While Halliday admitted to her disappointment at missing such a strong final placing, she was generally happy with his performance: “He now feels very confident at this level and is improving all the time. The fence we had trouble at was probably the most challenging on the course – a corner fence on an angle coming off a hill- and perhaps I should have taken the option instead, but sometimes you have to just have a go at the straight route! I didn’t get the best line to the jump and he got a little confused as to what I wanted him to do and just glanced off it, but he is still learning at this level and we all make mistakes sometimes. Generally he was excellent throughout and I feel very confident about his future at top level.”

Donovan competed in the Novice category and backed up another good dressage test with a double clear in Show Jumping and Cross Country to rank just outside the top ten in a competitive field.

Fox was also entered in the Advanced section, but Liz was only ever planning to do the Dressage and Show Jumping for experience and as a pre-run for the forthcoming Gatcombe Park International Horse Trials.

“The plan was always to miss the Cross Country test to avoid the extra wear and tear on his legs as he recently did Barbury CIC*** and was very good on Cross Country there.” said Halliday. “One of the judges was a little harsh with his marks in the Dressage, but the other judge was far more generous which is encouraging. He then had one rail down in the Show Jumping which was purely down to him being a bit too keen, but for the most part he jumped well.”

“I’m next going to Gatcombe Park on 1-3 August with Fox entered in the Intermediate Championships and Oscar entered in the Advanced section. Donovan with then go on the 4th to the Smith Lawn event in the novice section, and I am looking forward to running all of them after their positive weekend at Aston-le-Walls.”
