Halliday shines at Festival of British Eventing
Equestrian News Release
Dual sportswoman Liz Halliday competed at the Gatcombe Park Festival of British Eventing at the weekend and produced strong results with her horses Oscar and Fox.
At one of the biggest events of the season, Halliday secured top-half finishes in both the Advanced and Intermediate Championship categories in a hugely competitive 70-strong field of horses.
Oscar entered the Advanced section and was ranked fourth overall after an impressive showing on the Dressage test. He had one rail down in the Show Jumping, before running clear through the Cross Country section. A final ranking of 26th overall was a satisfying result ahead of Oscar’s CIC*** event at the Hartpury Horse Trials this weekend.
“The Cross Country course was quite hilly and I didn’t want to run him too hard as we’re building up for Hartpury at the weekend,” admitted Liz. “But he still went clear and also did his best Dressage to date. This was a proper advanced competition and very difficult on all three tests, so I was very pleased with how he went.”
Fox entered the Intermediate Championship (run at Advanced level) and immediately impressed with his best-ever dressage score. Two fences down in the Show Jumping test dropped him a little down the order but, despite a major moment at the water jump on the Cross Country, he avoided any penalties to finish just shy of the top 20 overall in 23rd place.
“I actually wasn’t that pleased with his Dressage, so to score so well was very pleasing because he has a lot more to come,” said Liz. “We both had a near miss at the water jump, but managed to get away with it. He left his legs in on a big rail going into the water and I ended up wrapped around his ears! Thankfully he stopped and I managed to stay on, so we had no penalties other than the resulting time faults.
“Overall it was another very good weekend and there were plenty of positives to take from it. I am now heading to Hartpury CIC*** with Oscar and will be hoping for a good result there as well as gaining a last qualifier for the Blenheim CCI*** in September.”
Meanwhile, Halliday is set to announce some major news regarding the other half of her sporting life, motorsport. “We’re close to making a big announcement which will see me back in a race car for the first time since the Le Mans 24 Hours last year,” she revealed.
