Halliday pleased with her new horses after a successful competition weekend

The California-born, British-based 3 Day eventer and racing driver, has taken on a number of new steeds this winter as she looks to develop them for eventing competition. Vimto and Ollie made their debuts in a dressage competition at Oldencraig and both scored excellent results.

In their classes, Ollie took first and third place finishes, with Vimto finishing fifth and sixth.

“It was a very encouraging start from both of them,” said Halliday. “They’ve never really done any dressage before, so for Ollie to win her first time out and Vimto to also finish highly in a field of over 20 horses is very impressive. It’s particularly pleasing for me because I’ve worked so hard with them. Just a couple of weeks ago they were nowhere near ready, yet they have improved so quickly.”

The following day Liz took one of her other new horses, Billy (Baldaghade) to compete at Nurstead Court in a Pre-Novice competition. In only his third ever event, Billy finished in the top ten with a fine performance in all three disciplines.

“Billy moves up to novice level in a couple of weeks so this was a nice run for him and his best result so far,” said Liz. “He had one rail down in the Show Jumping and just a single time fault in the Cross Country, while his Dressage test went really well. He’s coming along nicely too and we’ll see how he goes when he steps up a level at Mattingley later in the month.”

Donovan (Intrepid) meanwhile will contest his first Intermediate-level event at Aston Le Walls on the 15th of May and warmed-up with a run out at Hambledon. The event included Intermediate Dressage and Show Jumping tests with a novice-level Cross Country, and although he ran as Hors Concours (HC) and therefore wasn’t included in the official results, Liz felt it was a useful run.

“He did really well and would have been in the top three had we not had to enter as HC,” she said. “He was right up there in the scores and it was an excellent pre-cursor to his first Intermediate event.”

Liz will continue her eventing programme at Aston-le-Walls, Mattingley, Borde Hill and Brigstock over the coming weeks.
