Halliday’s Season Starts with a Strong Showing in Portugal

Liz Halliday kicked off her 3-Day Eventing season in fine style last weekend with two strong performances in the international CCI** event at Barroca d’Alva in Portugal.

The dual-sportswoman, who also competes on the international stage in sportscar racing, finished an excellent 4th in the 40-strong field with one of her horses Fox, and was as equally delighted with a 12th place finish for Oscar, a superb result on his CCI** debut.

“I am very pleased!” said Liz upon her return to her UK-base in East Grinstead. “The judges were maybe a little harsh on Oscar during the dressage because I felt that he’d done a very nice test, but we were clear with only a few time faults on the cross country phase, which is very good for his first attempt at that length of course. He had one rail down in the show jumping but he jumped really well and I’m sure he’ll be clear next time.”

Liz also had praise for Fox who she described as producing one of his ‘best efforts’. “He was a super-star!” she enthused. “I think it was the best dressage test he has ever done at two-star level and he jumped clear and inside the time limit on the cross country. He was then one of only six horses to jump clear in the show jumping which gave us a fourth place finish overall and my best result on him so far. All in all it was a very good start to the season!”

Halliday warmed-up for the event by entering Barroca’s CIC** (Fox) and CIC* (Oscar) events the previous weekend, where both horses also performed well.

“As it was the first event of the year and the weekend before the CCI, I wasn’t really chasing a result, but they both performed very well,” Liz revealed. They both jumped clear in the cross country and the show jumping. Both classes were very full, with close to 100 entrants, and Oscar and Fox were both ranked in the top half of the field.”

As well as marking the start of her 2008 campaign, the event was also Halliday’s first since suffering a fractured collar-bone during a fall at Brightling Park last July. “It was a little nerve wracking at first, but I quickly settled back into it, and it was great to have such successful runs with both horses.”

Halliday will be back in action on her new horse Donovan on 22 March in the pre-novice class at Munstead, UK. Oscar, meanwhile will get a second CCI** outing at Compiegne, France, in April, with Fox getting ready for a CIC*** event at Chatsworth, UK, in early May.

Along side her eventing schedule, Liz is also planning to make her fourth appearance at the famous Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race in June.
