WELLINGTON, Fla., Jan. 4--The Palm Beach Adult Medal, created for adult amateur equitation riders at the 2009 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, is being sponsored by Hermès.
The class is being offered throughout the 12 weeks of WEF beginning next Wednesday at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.
The final is to be held in the International Arena in Week 12 and the winner will receive an Hermès saddle.
The Palm Beach Adult Medal has been created to promote equitation among adults at WEF rather than be a year long series.
The Palm Beach Adult Medal series has adopted a similar concept to the major national equitation competitions that are aimed primarily at juniors, but is open to all Adult Amateur Members of the U.S. Equestrian Federation.
Contestants will be required to perform over a minimum of eight fences not exceeding 3' 3" and a flat phase of walk, trot and canter. Each section of the class will count for 50 percent.
Classes offered during each of the first 11 of 12 weeks of WEF will present courses of increasing technicality, but not exceeding the fence height of 3' 3".
The top 20 competitors or top 50 percent, whichever is greater, in WEF standings will qualify for the final.
Points are calculated using the WEF increment system: 1st place 7 pts., 2nd place 5 pts., 3rd place 4 pts., 4th place 3 pts., 5th place 2 pts. and 6th place 1 pt. A multiplier is applied depending on the number of entries in the class.
The winner of the final will receive an Hermès saddle. Second and third places will receive various Hermès gifts and apparel. Special final ribbons will be awarded through 8th place.
