Hillary Dobbs Fights Flu to Aid Women Beat Men in "Battle of Sexes" Classes & Ride to Victory in "Gambler's Choice"

WELLINGTON,Fla., Jan. 24--Male against female, husbands battling wives, established stars challenged by sparkling newcomers and Olympic gold versus Olympic gold. We even saw one rider, twenty-year old Hillary Dobbs, who helped the women win the “Battle of the Sexes” show jumping challenge (after battling her own flu and even having an IV drip and a temperature only last Tuesday while finishing exams at Harvard in Cambridge, Mass). There is something to be said for female determination! And it paid off, the West Palm Beach resident and Harvard student not only help the women win on her mount Udento VDL but riding to victory in “The Gambler's Choice" class on Marengo, at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL this weekend..

Twenty top jumper riders -- 10 men and 10 women -- join in a $55,000 Battle of the Sexes family fun night under the lights at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center on Saturday, Jan. 24. The two teams that include the world's top Olympians will go head to head in three contests -- a speed derby over a wide variety of jumps, a match race in which a male and a female rider will gallop their horses side by side over identical jumper courses and a finale over a series of jumps called a 6-bar course that is likely to be well over six feet in height. For the record, the team of 10 women scored 31 points to win $50,000 shared between them, while the runners-up (males) scored 24 points and collected $5,000.

This year's event included many Olympians as well as other top riders including

Eric Lamaze of Canada, 2008 Olympic individual gold and team silver medalist,

the USA's double Olympic team gold medalist Beezie Madden and Laura Kraut of

the 2008 Olympic gold medal team. Other female riders include Georgina Bloomberg, Candice King, Leslie Howard, Debbie Stephens, Lubov Kotchetova of Russia, Hillary Dobbs, Danielle Torano, Christine McCrea and Casey Hodges.

The men's team includes, Kent Farrington, Ali Nilforushan, Charlie Jayne, Todd

Minikus, Jimmy Torano, Mario Deslauriers of Canada, Peter Charles of Great

Britain, Shane Sweetnam, Darragh Kerins and Jonathan McCrea of Ireland. Team

captains will be Ian Millar, a nine-time Olympian and member of Canada's 2008 silver medal squad, and Anne Kursinski, a three-time USA Olympian and reserve for the 2008 team.

Among the highlights were relative newcomer Casey Hodges, 21, of Aiken, S.C.

being the top scorer for the women with 10 points, equaling Jimmy Torano of Ft.

Lauderdale, Fla. Russian Olympian Ljubov Kochetova won both her speed and match

races, as did the USA's Olympic gold medalist Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, N.Y. over Canada's Eric Lamaze who won individual gold and team silver at the 2008 Games.

The top rider for the combined speed and match races was Candice King of Wellington, Fla.. who took home a Nespresso coffee maker in addition to her

share of the winner's purse. Jimmy Torano was equal first in the six-bar with

Casey Hodges. In addition to Jimmy riding against his wife, Danielle, Christine

and Jonathan McCrea, husband and wife, also rode against each other.

Hillary be with her parents, CNN anchor Lou Dobbs and wife Debi, during her winter break from school and will be available at the Winter Equestrian Festival if you'd like to meet her in person and talk about her goals and decision to compete even when her health was not good and she hadn't shown for some time.
