H.I.T.S. Ocala to Host Popular Conformation/ Handler's Clinic in February

On February 29, 2008 H.I.T.S Ocala at Post Time Farm will host the handler’s clinic that has been so well attended at WEF in Palm Beach over the years, and most recently held in the horse breeding country of Virginia.

Our clinician will be veteran USEF “R” Judge Ellen Shevella. Ms Shevella has held the “R” designation in Hunter Breeding, Hunters and Hunter Seat Equitation for over 20 years and has judged most major horse shows from Florida to California.

“This will be the first time we have offered the clinic in the Ocala area.” Ms Shevella explained. “Ocala seems like a natural for it due to all the folks showing at H.I.T.S and the close proximity of so many breeders and horse enthusiasts. Having H.I.T.S. supply their lovely Post Time Farm gives a great central location for people to assemble for the class.”

“I originally started these clinics after judging a Pony Conformation class at a very important horse show where half the class couldn’t make their ponies jog. Then the other half didn’t model their ponies very well at all. Our young riders need to know the basics of conformation and movement. Posing your horse is not just about rattling a peppermint in front of them!”

From the start of the clinics there has been enthusiastic interest from breeders wishing to learn better handling techniques and tips and tricks of the trade. Recently many students have been attending from college programs and 4H state judging teams as well. “The first half of the clinic is devoted to understanding basic conformation principles of form and function. I also try and spend time covering ways of disguising defects by perfecting stance as well as some good grooming tips. I have had two pony riders tell me that after taking the clinic and practicing they never got moved back again in the conformation class again.”

The final part of the seminar allows participants to practice judge a class of four hunters ending with open discussion of the placing. All pre-registered attendees will receive an instructional handbook prepared by Ms. Shevella to take home.

Following the clinic session the H.I.T.S. restaurant will be the site of an exhibitor party with food and cash bar and a judged horseless horse show for junior exhibitors complete with prizes.

To register for the clinic you may fill out a registration form at the H.I.T.S. show office, or email allstarpro112@yahoo.com. You may also call 434-242-8937 for further details and information. The H.I.T.S. Horse Show ground is located at Post Time Farm, 13710 US Hwy. 27, Ocala, Fl. Ms. Shevella is also available for private sessions with you and your show stock. She still has a few openings in the 2008 calendar for judging or clinic engagements.
