Katie Polk and Eminem Win Adult Hunter Classic at Horse Shows by the Bay I

Traverse City, MI - July 21,2007 - As the sun was beginning to set on Flintfields, home of Horse Shows by the Bay, the second round of the $10,000 NAL/WIHS Adult Hunter Classic got underway. Katie Polk of Malibu, CA, guided her striking black gelding, Eminem, to the victory with a combined score of 170 points.

For the second round, the adult hunter classic moved into the Polk Family Main Hunter Ring. The top 15 horse and rider combinations from the first round took on a course of 10 jumping efforts while spectators enjoyed a complementary buffet in the hospitality tent. "I think that to move it to the main hunter ring for the second round made it special, and I think [Dean Rheinheimer] did a great job with the course," said Polk.

The classic was sponsored by Lisa A.H. Cudahy and the winner received a beautiful monogrammed cooler. Ashley Hotz and Summer Catch earned second place while Laura Beckworth received third.

The $5,000 NAL/WIHS Children's Hunter Classic, co-sponsored by Equisports, Inc., Baskin Farm and Fair Acres Farm, took place immediately following the adults. Twelve-year-old Caitlyn Ziegler piloted her two horses, five-year-old Safari and six-year-old Winter Place, to first and third, respectively. "They are both really fun to ride but totally opposite," Ziegler explained. Ziegler also received a monogrammed cooler. With Ziegler receiving the monogrammed cooler and earning third, Laura Baginski and Prep School took second place.

Earlier in the day, the junior hunter divisions crowned their champions. Katie Dinan and Allejandro have only been together for about two weeks, but that didn't stop Dinan from setting the bar high at their first horse show. The new pair, winning three out of five classes, dominated the Large Junior Hunter 15 & Under division, easily earning the division tricolor.

"I am very excited. We bought him about two weeks ago, and he's been great. I'm so grateful for all my trainers," said Dinan. Dinan rides with Tim and Kelly Goguen at Boggs Hill and also showed Contender in the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under division, receiving a first, fourth, six and seventh.

Sixteen-year-old Kels Bonham has been a force to be reckoned with at Horse Shows by the Bay I in both the hunter and jumper rings. In the Small Junior Hunter 16-17, she won all five classes on Urlala, a six-year-old Dutch Warmblood owned by Tri Mare LLC, earning the division tricolor along with the Grand Junior Hunter Championship. "She was circuit champion in the junior hunters at Indio this year, and she's third or fourth in the country right now, I think. She's one of the sweetest horses we have but she's spoiled - She's one of those horses that thinks she knows her job and you just have to let her go and do it," explained Bonham.

The junior hunter divisions included a handy hunter class that featured a trot jump, a couple optional rollbacks and a forward bending line. As always, the trot fence caused several problems, as did the forward lines. Bonham and Urlala took everything in stride, definitely standing out from the rest. "I do her in the equitation also so she's really good at [the handy hunter] stuff. The ring rode really well, and I like the courses they've been setting, they've been nice and open and encourage you to gallop a little more which I like doing in the hunters," explained Bonham.

Other junior hunter winners included Kaitlin Campbell on Barbados winning the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under tricolor. Campbell also won the reserve championship in the same division with Unique. Marika Raff piloted Tophat to reserve championship in the Small Junior Hunter 16-17. In the Large Junior Hunter 16-17, Caroline Gibson and Hotshot earned the reserve championship. In the Large Junior Hunter 16-17 division, Grace Socha rode Amigo F to the tricolor while Amanda Cohen and Odette took home the reserve.
