Horse Shows By the Bay Features Area Talent During First Annual Local Rider Day

Traverse City, MI - July 29, 2008 - Area residents had an opportunity to shine in Ring 4 today at Horse Shows by the Bay. The feature event for Tuesday's schedule was the Local Rider Day Program which showcased area talent competing in classes earmarked for beginning riders new to competition. The first half of the program was dedicated to riders competing at the walk, trot, and canter. Riders from both the English and Western disciplines went head to head under the direction of Judge Courtney Francisco.

In the Walk Trot section, Chelsea Diesler of Traverse City emerged as the tricolor champion as she accumulated the most points in her division. Her sister, Katie, also acquired a championship in the Beginner Walk Trot. Both girls ride at Tri County Farm in Leelanau, MI with trainer Deb Cochran and are members of the Northwest Michigan Association Western Horse Clubs. Today they chose to ride English so that they could gain experience in the English show ring.

Emerging the victors in the afternoon over fences events were Allyson Meyer of Interlochen riding her brother's 12-year-old mule Lucky 6 Honey and Jamie Endicott riding her newly purchased horse Excel Saga.

Lucky 6 Honey is a rare breed in today's hunter/jumper show ring since she is a mule. Mules typically are bred to be used as pack horses, not jumping horses. However, Honey, as she's affectionately called by her owners, likes jumping fences much better. "When we purchased her, she was an endurance mule so all she did was go fast and hard; but now we've trained her to jump and she loves it. My brother competes her in mule events all over the country," said Allyson Meyer.

Endicott won both the Advanced Jumping Division and the Equitation Classic and as such was crowned the Overall Champion of the day. The Classic was the most technically challenging event, requiring riders to jump the fences in a more complicated pattern. This fall Endicott will be competing for the Traverse City Central High School Equestrian Team. "My horse performed very well today. I am pleased by how focused she was," said Endicott.

Co-sponsors Kathy Ball & Robin Snieder from Lake Leelanau's badpony.com and Jessica Collins from Traverse City's Red Hare Tack and Togs were on-site to present the championship show blanket to Endicott. "Horse Shows by the Bay Management rolled out the red carpet for our local riders - we are pleased to be part of such a great organization," remarked Collins.

Local Rider Day kicked off the final leg of the three week Horse Shows by the Bay Equestrian Festival which is being staged at Flintfields Horse Park in Williamsburg, MI through August 3rd. The premier events for this week are the Dressage by the Bay competition, the U of M vs. MSU Polo Match and the $25,000 D-BRAIDER Cherry Capital Classic Grand Prix.
