FORMER CHAMPION FLAT JOCKEY PAT EDDERY RECEIVES HONORARY OBE FROM CULTURE SECRETARY TESSA JOWELL

DEPARTMENT FOR CULTURE, MEDIA AND SPORT News Release (038 5) issued by the Government News Network on 8 March 2005 Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell today presented an Honorary OBE to Pat Eddery in recognition of his valuable services to horse racing.
The Irish born former champion Flat jockey retired in 2003 after a long and distinguished career in which he rode more than 4,600 winners in Britain, making him one of the most successful jockeys of all time. The triple Epsom Derby winner has secured 11 champion jockey titles and 14 English Classic wins. He has also enjoyed success at Royal Ascot winning 73 times and the Arc de Triomphe 4 times.
Tessa Jowell said:
"I am delighted to present Pat with his OBE. The award of an honorary OBE acknowledges an extraordinary sporting career, in which Pat broke numerous records time and time again, thrilling racegoers and rewarding owners and trainers over five decades. One of the most naturally gifted horsemen of his generation he has been a superb ambassador, not only to horse racing, but sport in general."
Pat Eddery said:
"This is a great honour and I feel very privileged not only to receive this award but to have enjoyed so many wonderful moments in a sport I love. I have been fortunate enough to have ridden all round the world for some truly great owners and trainers but where would any of us have been without the horses? From the Dancing Braves to the lowliest sellers winning at Bath, I owe them so much."
