Three Horses Unlimited Homebreds Qualify for USEF/Markel Young Horse Dressage Championships

Albuquerque, NM--Horses Unlimited is having a great summer. In August, three Horses Unlimited homebred youngsters, Pikko Del Rio HU, Pikko Del Cerro HU and Noble Destiny HU, qualified for the USEF/Markel Young Horse Dressage Championships that will be held this week at The Kentucky Horse Park. As if that was not enough, this month two Horses Unlimited three year old stallions were awarded Provisional Breeding Licenses, and a third young stallion is slated to attend the stallion testing. In addition, three foals received premium awards, including the Champion Filly, La Fauxpas HU.

"What an amazing summer," said Anne Sparks, owner of Horses Unlimited. "As a breeder, you face numerous challenges and even heartbreak. So it's really wonderful to have a couple of great months with so many horses doing well." For Sparks, breeding horses is in her blood; her grandfather bred champion saddle horses. "You have to love the process of breeding, from before conception, through foaling and weaning. Eventually, if you are fortunate, you get to the under saddle phase. To have three stallions on their way to becoming licensed stallions and three horses headed to the young horse championships is an incredible reward. This is what every breeder dreams of."

Pikko Del Cerro HU, by Pik L out of a Rohdiamont mare, has qualified in the five year old division for the USEF/Markel Young Horse Dressage Championships. The handsome bay stallion is a multiple winner at Dressage at Devon (DAD). At the 2007 DAD, he won both USEF Four Year Old classes with scores above 80%. In 2005, he earned the Born in the USA Award with his victory in the two year old colts class with a 90%. Cerro's full brother, Pikko del Rio HU, has also qualified for Kentucky in the four year old division. Representing Noble Champion at the championships is his chestnut daughter, Noble Destiny. Out of a Drosselklang II mare, Destiny is slated to compete in the five year old championship. Noble Destiny earned top ribbons at the 2007 Dressage at Devon in the under saddle and materiale classes. Destiny is also an Elite Mare candidate for the American Hanoverian Society.

At the ISR/Oldenburg NA inspection, three Horses Unlimited stallions were presented and all three were favorably received. Galante HU, a three year old by the Olympic dressage stallion Galant du Serein, was awarded the Provisional Certified Breeding License. Out of the Landor S mare Landina, Galante looks like a young version of his impressive father. He scored an 82.5 on free jumping. "I knew he was special the moment he hit the ground," Sparks remembers. "He has three great gaits and an incredible jump."

Liberando VT, by Leonberg out of a Roemer mare, also received his Provisional Certified Breeding License. "Liberando is an interesting story," Sparks recalls. "We donated a Leonberg breeding to Virginia Tech. The result was Liberando. He was Champion Colt at his inspection as a weanling. We liked him so much that we purchased him." Both Galante HU and Liberando VT will begin their careers under saddle and then head on to the new 12-day stallion test. Another homebred, Noble Capitol, by Noble Champion out of a Capitol mare, is slated for his Provisional Certified Breeding License pending the 12-day stallion test, which is expected to be held in Florida during the winter show season.

The stallions weren't the only horses receiving accolades. Three of the four Horses Unlimited foals presented received Premium status during the inspection. La Fauxpas HU, by Leonberg out the Premium mare Fee, who is by Fidermark, wowed the judges. The impressive filly received an 8.5 overall and the Champion Filly title. Galant's Legacy HU, a full brother to Galante HU, received an 8.3 overall and Premium status. Lady of Quality was also Premium with an 8.0 overall. She's by Leonberg out of Querida.
