The HSUS and Parelli Natural Horsemanship Join Forces in Celebration of Horses

(April 8, 2009) — The Humane Society of the United States and world-renowned natural horsemanship trainers, Pat and Linda Parelli, will again join forces to spotlight the trainability and intelligence of rescued horses: this time in Harrisburg, Pa. April 17-19 at the PA Farm Show Complex & Expo Center. The HSUS is working with Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue to help a horse in need of training through a three-day development program with Pat Parelli.

The featured horse at the Harrisburg event is expected to be Miss Judge, a stunning 11-year-old thoroughbred mare rescued from a Pennsylvania horse auction. Pat Parelli will assess and work with her to gain her confidence and show her true potential. At the end of the event, she will be available for adoption to an approved, loving home.

“The success of the Tennessee Celebration event is a wonderful indicator for the event in Harrisburg and all the remaining events,” said Keith Dane, director of equine protection for The Humane Society of the United States. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Parellis to celebrate horses, highlight the value of adoptable rescued horses and help find homes for them across the country.”

The first Celebration took place in Franklin, Tenn., featuring, Beau, an 8-year-old thoroughbred gelding, provided by Volunteer Equine Advocates, a Tennessee-based horse rescue organization. Video of Pat Parelli interacting with Beau at the Tenn. Celebration is here.

Beau has now safely travelled to Ocala, Fla. to continue his renaturalization at the Parelli University. Parelli was impressed with this young gelding and adds, “There are some really fabulous horses waiting for homes. Beau’s not ready for just anybody right now, but we’ll keep sharing the story of his progress.”

Natural horsemanship is a gentle training technique that uses knowledge about herd dynamics, horse behavior and communication to help people and horses communicate effectively and build trust-based relationships. The Parelli Celebration events offer inspirational and educational seminars and training sessions, designed to help horse owners understand how to communicate effectively with their horses and build a lasting partnership both in and out of the saddle.

This initiative builds on other programs developed by The HSUS to encourage horsemen and women to consider a rescued horse when bringing a new horse into the family and to help horse rescues operate more effectively.

A portion of the proceeds of some ticket sales will be donated to The HSUS for its equine protection efforts. In addition, The HSUS will have a booth at each Celebration, where participants will have access to informational brochures and other horse care materials.

Other Celebration venues include: May 15-17 - Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center -Reno, Nev.; June 5-7 - Alliant Energy Center - Madison, Wis.; July 24-26 – Kemper Arena - Kansas City, Mo.; Sept. 25-27 - Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum - Fort Worth, Texas; and Oct. 9-11 - The Lakeland Arena - Lakeland, Fla.
