National Hunter Jumper Champion Sarah Ward To Join University of South Carolina’s Equestrian Team

July 6, 2009 - BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – Sarah Ward, a top national hunter and jumper rider with countless wins at national Finals, will join the University of South Carolina equestrian coach Boo Major and the school’s equestrian team’s Gamecocks in the 2009-10 season. The 18 year old who lives in Windemere (near Orlando), FL and also has a home in Atlanta, GA, will be a Freshman at the University of SC. The award winning young equestrian, who trains with the Finally Farm in Camden, SC, plans to ride on the school’s Gamecock’s equestrian team and show nationally in both the hunters and jumpers with trainer’s Jack Towell and Liza Towell Boyd.

Ward has numerous championships in both the hunters and the jumpers from around the country including the Winter Equestrian Festival and Pennsylvania National Horse Show. She also finds time to write a monthly national column “My View” for the equestrian publication Sidelines. Having started her career in the saddle at 13, Ward quickly made up for lost time finishing up her junior year being awarded Best Child Rider at both the Aiken and Blowing Rock Horse Shows, as well as receiving the prestigious award of Overall Jr. Hunter Champion at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in 2008. Sarah’s parents Bob and Diane Ward are fully supporting their daughter’s decision to take on the task of competing on both on the collegiate team and on the A Circuit with Finally Farm.

South Carolina’s head equestrian coach Boo Major and barn manager Allison Orvin are excited to welcome Sarah Ward to the school’s top-notch facility in Blythewood, One Wood Farm, in September. The facility has been the home to school's equestrian teams since the Gamecocks began occupying it at the start of the 2004-05 seasons.

Heading into its seventh year in the facility, South Carolina has been nearly unstoppable at One Wood Farm, highlighted by a streak of 14 consecutive victories from October 2005 to October 2008. That streak included wins against teams such as Georgia, Auburn, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and TCU. With the addition of Ward, it looks to be no stopping the Gamecock Equestrian Team.

The South Carolina equestrian team was honored at South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet for the team's past accomplishments and championship history. Under the direction of Coach Major, South Carolina has become a premier program in collegiate equestrian. With the advent of the Varsity Equestrian National Championships, the Gamecocks won overall national championships in 2005 and 2007, and the Hunter Seat team won three consecutive national championships from 2005 to 2007.

Sponsors for recognizing the Gamecocks include the Town of Blythewood, the South Carolina Horseman's Council and past S.C. Athletic Hall of Fame Presidents Sonny Dickinson and Pete DiVenere.
