Miss Independent Back in the Blue After Nine-Month Layoff

WELLINGTON, Fla., Feb. 23--Miss Independent, a mainstay of the U.S. team that won a silver medal at the World Equestrian Games and gold in the Samsung Super League, came back from nine months recuperating from an injury to win the Absorbine Myoplast 1.50-meter Classic at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival presented by Zimmerman Advertising Saturday.

A "thrilled and very happy" Laura Kraut, her longtime rider, said. Despite the win in only her fourth competition--and the first at 1.50m--since recovering from a hoof injury, she is undecided whether to compete "Indy," as she is nicknamed, in the U.S. selection trials for the 2008 Olympic Games beginning next week.

Six of the 35 combinations that started the class at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center were clear.

In the jumpoff, however, only the 12-year-old gray mare went clean in a time of 46.433 secs. Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil on Double H Farm's Cantate Z was second with four faults in a time of 40.573 secs. and Lisa Silverman of New York on Ardeche van de Zelm third also with four faults in a time of 40.876 secs.

Miss Independent was injured during the Samsung Super League event at St. Gallen in Switzerland last May. The horse was treated and stall rested in Europe until Kraut, of Wellington, determined at the end of the year she was fit enough to return home.

In the past two weeks, Kraut competed the horse in two 1.30m and one 1.40m classes to bring her slowly back to jumping fitness. Even so, she said, because of a lack of fitness, she "felt tired and stiff."

After Saturday's first round then a jumpoff, she said, Miss Independent felt "really fantastic."

Of the five selection trials beginning next Thursday at PBIEC, she said: "I'm not sure she's ready for five 1.60-meter rounds."

She will speak with U.S. Chef d'Equipe George Morris and will consider entering the first trial on Thursday night under lights to see how Miss Independent performed, then "take it one day at a time."

Kraut has her longtime international mount, Anthem, and Cedric that she can ride in the selection trials.

Miss Independent rode in her first Samsung Super League four years ago in Rotterdam and since then has been a mainstay of the U.S. team in the premier series of jumping.
