International Hoof-Care Summit Offers A World-Level Education

Event brings together farriers and equine vets from the United States, Europe and Mexico for 66 hours of intensive education, discussion

Brookfield, Wis. — Farriers and equine veterinarians from the United States, Europe and Mexico are expected to attend the fourth annual International Hoof-Care Summit to be held at the Cincinnati Convention Center and the Cincinnati Hilton Hotel, Jan. 30 through Feb 2.

The presenters will include some of the world’s most renowned horseshoers, veterinarians and researchers, including some members of the International Equine Veterinarians Hall of Fame and the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame. The event draws more than 700 hoof-care professionals each year.

Beyond attracting some of the leading experts in hoof care, the International Hoof-Care Summit sets itself apart from other horseshoeing conferences and conventions by focusing on education, with no shoeing contests or association meetings. The IHCS provides education through various formats, including:

= 8 General Sessions — Featured speakers present the latest information about hoof-care topics of widespread interest to all attendees.

= 12 Classroom Sessions — Attendees choose hoof-care topics of personal interest from a wide assortment of offerings, gathering with others for a presentation and discussion led by a recognized expert on the subject.

= 24 Roundtables — Again, attendees select topics of personal interest and gather for face-to-face discussions, much like meeting around the kitchen table to trade experiences and tips.

= Networking — Some of the most useful information is discovered during informal chats in the hallways and meeting rooms between scheduled sessions.

= Attendees also receive several hoof-care publications valued at more than $110 from American Farriers Journal, which hosts the event. Veterinarians and vet technicians also can earn continuing education credits for attending, as approved by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.

Several hours of the conference are dedicated to a trade show in which industry suppliers focus on the latest products available to the market. The trade show hours do not conflict with the scheduled learning sessions.

“We’re proud to be able to bring together so many dedicated professionals to discuss both the latest methods and theories in hoof care as well as the tried and true techniques,” says Frank Lessiter, editor and publisher of American Farriers Journal. “The farriers and vets who come to the conference are serious about improving the care they provide and the business that provides them a living. It’s serious, sometimes provocative stuff, but the bond between the attendees makes for a friendly and sharing atmosphere.”

Among the more than 40 featured presenters at the upcoming Summit are:

= Rob Sigafoos, chief of farrier service at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine.

= Scott McGinness, equine veterinarian from Surrey, England.

= KC La Pierre, head of the International Institute of Equine Podiatry, Ocala, Fla.

= Chris Gregory, farrier and owner of the Heartland Horseshoeing School in Lamar, Mo.

= Bob Pethick, a 35-year veteran farrier and Olympic Games shoer.

= Meike van Heel, a hoof researcher at the Equine Performance Laboratory at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Registration remains open to farriers, equine veterinarians, horse owners and others interested in hoof care.
