Jade Hunter, Son of Mr. Prospector and Sire of the Great Azeri, Retires to Old Friends

GEORGETOWN, KY—July 8, 2009—Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred retirement facility, announced today that Jade Hunter, the 25 year old sire of 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri, will be permanently pensioned at the organization’s Georgetown farm.

On the racetrack, Jade Hunter (Mr. Prospector-Jadana (IRE), by Pharly) was campaigned by trainer Richard Lundy for owners Bruce McNall and Allen Paulson. He won 6 of his 14 starts, including the G1 Donn Handicap and the G1 Gulfstream Park Handicap, but retired in 1988 at the age of 4 after he fractured his right front cannon bone during a workout. His lifetime earnings total $407,260.

In the breeding shed, Jade Hunter sired 47 stakes winner (16 Graded). His top earners include Yagli ($1,702,121), World Hunter ($1,123,977), and, most notably, the incomparable race mare Azeri, whose 11-race win streak and earnings of $4,079,820 made her the No. 1 female on the North American All-Time Money Earners' list.

Jade Hunter was originally retired to stud at Brookside Farm in Lexington, KY. Most recently he stood at Dutchess Views Farm in Pine Plains, NY

The decision to donate the horse to Old Friends was made by the Allen Paulson Living Trust, which is run by siblings Jim Paulson and Vicky Paulson.

Jade Hunter was transported from New York yesterday courtesy of Morrissey’s Horse Pullmans, which also transported free of charge Old Friends retiree EscapedFromNewYork earlier this year. The stallion arrive in Georgetown at about 10:00 am this morning.

“It’s a great honor to have Jade Hunter here,” said Old Friends president and founder Michael Blowen. “We’re so grateful to the Paulson family for considering us and to the people at Hill ‘n’ Dale farm for helping to make the arrangements. Jade Hunter will be paddocked near Polish Navy and Glitterman, and we're looking forward to all of his many fans paying him a visit. ”
