Jen Raynes to be Feature Artist at 2009 Reining By The Bay Competition

Woodside, CA - July 18, 2009 - Reining By The Bay is pleased announce that Jen Raynes will be the feature artist at this year's competition, being held July 21-26, at the Woodside Horsepark. Raynes has been producing artwork for Reining By The Bay since 2000, will be onsite with her collection and will be producing new pieces during the show. Reining By The Bay is an FEI qualifying event and features over $150,000 in total added money and prizes.

Raynes' pieces focus on cropped views of the reiners and their horses in the hopes that the viewer will fill space with their imagination. She feels that the close-up view allows for the stopped action to have more of an impact. "I really love the moment of stopping the action in my work," Raynes explained. "It's so beautiful to have the dirt flying and to have the horse and rider in unison. The cropped image creates one unit rather than individuals in movement, and I think that is what the sport is all about."

Each piece is acrylic on canvas, but they are uniquely created because Raynes sometimes chooses to paint with her hands instead of brushes. She also uses unique colors for each horse that creates a thermal feeling. "I love being able to use alternative colors," Raynes noted. "Rather than a dog being brown and white I see it in other colors, and as I'm painting it's changing constantly. I put the colors on the palette and my arm and paint brush feel like they have a mind of their own, like an out of body experience. I feel it truly is a gift."

Raynes became involved with Reining By The Bay through Pat Warren in 2000. "Since the first image that I created for Reining by the Bay I have loved the event," she said. "I look forward to it every year and cannot wait for the next one. When Reining By The Bay ends everyone starts talking about the next painting and the next image that they want to use. It is usually a very extreme picture that they want to recreate and I cannot wait for the challenge."

During this year's competition Raynes will be onsite producing artwork and showcasing her unique style of painting with her hands. This will be an exciting opportunity for spectators and potential customers. "I will usually start and finish a painting at an event because it gives the customer an emotional link to the piece," stated Raynes. "It's become a part of them as well as a part of me."

"I love creating work for Reining by the Bay," Raynes continued. "I attend a lot of horse shows and I see people with Reining By the Bay t-shirts on and I'm proud to be a part of it. I have people asking when next year's image is coming out and what will it be. Some people say they collect the images, and it's funny because, wow, my work in unison with Reining By The Bay has grown to be collectible; that part is fascinating to me. Reining By The Bay is an iconic event."
