John Ward/Dema Paul Win Hackamore Classic Bridle Spectaculars

It was an afternoon of excitement when John Ward rode Smart Little Pepinic (Smart Little Uno X Pepinic) to win the Open Bridle Spectacular at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Hackamore Classic on April 28.

It’s always thrilling when the Bridle Spectacular event brings out some of those great stallions, and it was a treat for cow horse fans to see this good brown horse back in action. At the Paso Robles Events Center in Paso Robles, California, Ward’s consistent showing to a composite of 432 (146,141,145) added $5,480 to the 14-year-old’s already substantial earnings of $35,837.

Smart Little Pepinic, owned by Ward Ranch, has been ranked by Equi-Stat as one of the Top Ten Reined Cow Horse Sires. He’s finished in the top three at the World’s Greatest Horseman competition, as well, and has NCHA top ten finishes to his credit.

The Reserve Title went to another outstanding stallion when Jon Roeser piloted Mister Smart Remedy to within a half point of Ward (144,142.5, 145). The 6-year-old (Mister Dual Pep X Ima Smart Remedy) was the 2006 Klamath Reined Cow horse Classic Champion and co-Champion of the Idaho Reined Cow Horse Derby. Owned by Larry and Sharon Rose, he has NRCHA earnings over $80,000 and has also won in NCHA competition.

In the Non Pro Bridle Spectacular, Dema Paul rode another favorite to win the event - her gelding, Primos Bob Acre (Teninas First X Bob Acre Angelena).

Primos Bob Acre’s accomplishments include the 2004 Hackamore Stakes Championship; 2003 NRCHA Stakes Championship; 2003 Hackamore Classic Non Pro Champion; 2003 NRCHA Derby Reserve Championship and lifetime earnings over $135,000 before adding another $4,480 for the newest win!

The Reserve Non Pro Championship went to Ramona Wold on Ill Be A Lil Smarter (Ill Be Smart X Sis Royal Mahogany). Her 427.5 (142, 143.5, 142) earned her $3,680.

In the second day of competition of the 4- and 5-year-old Hackamore Classic, Tucker Robinson and Ken Wold lead the Open Hackamore Classic composite at the Paso Robles Events Center. Tucker is riding Days Zanolena (Smart Zanolena X Chex Out This Day) owned by Matt Day and Ken Wold is on Misters Brown Sugar (Mister Dual Pep X Plain Cute Sugar) owned by Douglas and Cynthia Granade. The two share a composite mark of 289.5, which also tops the Intermediate field for Robinson. Ed Robertson is leading the Limited Open Composite with a 280 (138, 142) on Luckiest Prize (Smokums Prize X Gunna Be Lucky) owned by Sheila Borjon.

In Saturday’s Rein Work, the highest Open and Intermediate Open score – a 149 - came from Randy Paul on Smokeelan (Elans Playboy X Smart Little Smokee) owned by Jill Smiekel George. Corey Cushing rode 2007 NRCHA Stakes Champion CC Spin Cycle (Ray Gay Quixote X Lenas Peppy Cutter) to a 146.5 for owner Cathy Corrigan Frank. That score was tied by Ted Robinson on Miss Catty Cash (Nu Cash X Gold Cloud Miss) owned by Mike and Linda Silveira. Richard Winters won the Limited Open Rein Work with a 145.5 on his Hip Addams (Hickorys Indian Pep X Wednesday Addams).
