Jorge Zamundio and Ulimto are the Ultimate Duo in the $5,000 1.45m Open Jumpers at the Kentucky Summer Classic

Lexington, KY- August 6, 2008 - The Kentucky Summer Classic started this morning at 8 a.m. The Walnut Arena hosted the 1.45m jumpers, followed by the 1.40m jumpers. Jorge Zamundio and his mount Ultimo, owned by Stransky's Mission Farm of Hallandale, FL, won the 1.45m class. The pair went double clear in a time of 41.684.

"I'm happy about it. I didn't take too many risks, because there were not too many risks to take. I knew my horse was going to be clear. I galloped a little bit to the two last fences, but I didn't do really tight turns," Zamundio said.

Ultimo is seven-years-old, and Zamundio explained that the horse was still green. "My options were way too hard for my seven year old, so I took the long way." The pair was one of two to go double clear.

Second place went to Sinatra, owned and shown by Aaron Vale of Ocala, FL. The duo completed the course in a time of 43.665. Third went to Angel Karolyi and Boxter, owned by Alex Jayne of Elgin, IL. The two finished the short course in 50.043 seconds and had 12 jumping faults. Rounding out the jump-off in fourth place was Arturo's Boy, owned by Casey Hodges of Aiken, SC, with Daniel Damen in the irons. They had 25 jumping faults and a time of 63.444.

The next class to show was the 1.40m, scored under table II .1, a timed first round. Sergio Campos and Monkey Du Parc, owned by Dianna Rodolpho of Longwood, FL, won by 0.902 seconds, beating out Angel Karolyi and Galant, owned by Mclain Ward of Brewster, NY.

"Speed was the key, you could gallop in between fences and make some tight turns," explained Campos. "Angel probably looked faster than I did. My track was a little tighter at the beginning of the course. From 1 to 2, 2 to 3, I was just in a better track."

Campos and Monkey Du Parc had a clean round in a time of 51.654. Karolyi and Galant went clear, and had a second place time of 52.556. "I didn't think I could beat his time with speed, I had to use tighter turns and different angles," Campos said.

Monkey Du Parc is an eight-year-old Selle Francais. "I did him through the young jumper classes for the last two years, and he's a contender for the Grand Prix. We are going to start him in the Grand Prix at this show," Campos smiled.

Picking up the yellow ribbon in a time of 57.429 was Robert Kraut and Nemo, owned by Meghan Moran of Malvern, PA. Fractions of a second back to fourth place with a time of 57.956 was Joe Fargis and Kimber, owned by Hidden Trail Farm of The Plains, VA.

The pink ribbon went to Hillary Simpson and Stedet's Leroy, owned by DK-USA Sport Horse LLC of Durham, NC in 59.501 seconds. In sixth, with a time of 60.309 was Cromwell and Tracey Weinberg of Lovettsville, VA. 61.105 seconds was the last time on the board, and was good enough to secure seventh place for Jill Knowles and Timberley, owned by Lisa Greenspon of Highland Park, IL. Eighth place went to Quentin Judge and Silvo, owned by Double H Farms of Wellington, FL with a time of 63.530. The last to go clear was Robin Sweely and Coming Star, owned by Acorn Hill Farm of Madison, VA. The pair completed their round in 67.668 seconds.

The Kentucky Summer Classic continues tomorrow with the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic set to start at 6 p.m. in the Walnut Arena at The Kentucky Horse Park. This will be the fourth of seven events in The Hagyard Challenge Series. At the end of the final event a $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus will be awarded to the rider who has accumulated the most money throughout the series.
