Karen Healey Stables Wins In Every Discipline at Del Mar National Horse Show
Equestrian News Release
Del Mar, CA- May 10- It was a fantastic week at the Del Mar National Horse Show for riders at Karen Healey Stables. They competed from May 3-8 and came away with multiple wins and placings in the equitation and medal classes, the hunter divisions and jumper classics.
Competition was held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Southern California and a big winner in the hunters was Country Grammar and Mary Ann Weisberg-Perry. She and the elegant bay gelding won three out of the five classes in their division and finished third and fifth in the remaining two. These wins gave her the championship in the Amateur-Owner 36 & Over Hunters. Country Grammar continued his winning ways when he captured first place in the $2,500 Amateur-Owner Hunter Classic.
Healey’s husband, Fred Bauer, also had his share of success at Del Mar. The pair was second in the Level 6 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumpers. They then returned for the win in the $2,500 Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic over 43 other entries. “Fred went in after one of my other riders and shaved four seconds off of her time. He was really fast and rode great. Nobody else could catch him,” said Healey. In the three phase $25,000 California Junior/Amateur Show Jumping Championship, Lauren Hester and Oxford finished in fifth place. Oxford is currently leading the nation in the Junior Jumpers.
Wins in the equitation classes are the norm for students of Karen Healey and this week was no different. Allison Lajoie and Cosmo teamed up to win the Foxfield Medal class and the 18 & Over Equitation Over Fences class. Second in the Foxfield Medal was Tammy Chipko and All That. They also won the CPHA Amateur Medal class and were second in the PCHA Adult Medal class. Michelle Morris and Eventual won the PCHA 14 and Under Medal class and were second in the CPHA Junior Medal. Torie Immel and Ambassador won the USEF Talent Search class and were second in the WCE Medal class.
All in all, it was a great week for Karen Healey Stables. In addition to doing well at the horse show, Healey made the decision to hire an assistant trainer. Healey has helped many young trainers get their start. Archie Cox, who worked for her from 1992 to 2000, said, “I moved out to California to work for Karen. It was a great opportunity to come out and work for somebody of her caliber.”
Respected trainer Linda Hough, who is also one of Healey’s closest friends, conveyed, “She’s taken a lot of young people under her wing and they have all left there opening up their own successful businesses. She is adamant that that happens and is proud of what she’s accomplished. That is a real compliment to Karen and her management. It’s her passing of the torch.”
The position will be filled by an up and coming rider, nineteen year old Kasey Ament. In 2004, Ament won the USEF Talent Search Finals-West, the PHA Medal Finals and was ninth in the USEF Medal Finals at Harrisburg, PA, while riding with Healey. Although she is young, Healey commented, “She is extraordinarily responsible and a hard worker.” Healey looked through piles of job applications, but found that she kept coming back to Ament. “I decided that I would rather teach somebody that I really knew. She rides beautifully and will be a great asset,” Healey acknowledged.
Ament will join the team at Karen Healey Stables when they compete this week at the Ranch and Coast Horse Show at the Showpark in Del Mar, CA, on May 10-15.
