Karen Healey Stables Riders Partner with Hap Hansen to Win Memorial Day Classic Equitation Challenge

Burbank, CA- May 31- The Memorial Day Classic Horse Show ended Monday, and the exciting Equitation Challenge was a cap to a great week for Karen Healey Stables. The Memorial Day Classic ran from May 26-30 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Multiple riders put in excellent performances, but it was Lauren Hester and Tammy Chipko who teamed with Hap Hansen for a thrilling win.
Chipko on All That and Hester on Timeless paired with top grand prix rider Hap Hansen to win the Equitation Challenge over Katie Gardner, Morgan Taylor, and Dan Silverstone. They also defeated eleven other teams. Last year, Timeless was also part of the winning team in the Equitation Challenge with amateur rider Donna French. Hester commented, “Tammy and Hap are both really good riders. I was excited because I knew we had a really good team.”
Hester also picked up good ribbons on Timeless. Together they won the Equitation 16-17 over fences class, were second in the WCE Junior/Amateur Medal class, and were fifth in the USEF Talent Search class. On her top junior jumper, Oxford, Hester was second in the 1.45m class.
Hester, who is only 17, also competed in her first grand prix this past weekend and they placed twelfth. It was a good class for Hester to use as her inaugural grand prix ride. “I was a little nervous, because I wasn’t sure how he’d react. We had eight faults, but I was happy with that.” Hester and Oxford are planning to compete in another grand prix sometime at The Oaks this summer, where there will be a “bigger, harder course.” Hester is also gearing up to compete at Young Riders in July.
Chipko was victorious on her jumper, Good Time Charlie, who was champion in the 1.20m division and placed second, third, and fourth in the Six Year Old Jumpers. She also piloted Helio Paws to a win in the 1.10m Added Jumper Stake class. Chipko guided Amnesty to her first classic win in the Ranch and Coast $5,000 Junior/Amateur Classic, which was held last week.
Also successful in the equitation ranks were Tedra Bates and Chipko’s All That. Bates won the USEF Talent Search class. On Liberal, she was second in the Equitation 18-35 over fences class and third in the CPHA Foundation Equitation class. In the jumpers, Fred Bauer and Hampton Court won the 1.30m Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper class and were fifth in the $2,500 Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic.
Michelle Morris and Bergerac were solid this week in the Small Junior 15 & Under Hunters, where they won the Handy Hunter class and also placed second, third, fourth, and fourth in the remaining classes.
Karen Healey also helped junior rider Hannah Selleck this week, because her trainer, Nicole Simpson, was out of town. Selleck won both phases of the Washington International Horse Show Equitation Classic on Kyle. In the Large Junior 15 & Under Hunter division, she tied for the championship on Bella.
Karen Healey Stables will continue their winning ways next week at the June Jamboree at Showpark in Del Mar, CA. After that, they will be at The Oaks in San Juan Capistrano for four weeks of competition.
