Katherine Newman Wins Iris McNeil Trophy at 124th National Horse Show and Family Festival

VHSA Presents Newman with Frances Newbill Rowe Award a Week Prior

Wellington, FL - December 10, 2007 - On Sunday, December 9, Katherine Newman of Allwyn Court in Wellington, FL, was presented the Iris McNeil Trophy in the Internationale Arena at the 124th National Horse Show and Family Festival. The presentation was held during the opening ceremonies for the FEI World Cup(TM) National Horse Show Grand Prix for the Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Championship presented by Equine Motorocoach.

The Iris McNeil Trophy is awarded to the junior rider who demonstrates a strong work ethic and, most importantly, a deep regard for all horses. The recipient must "show an outstanding sense of sportsmanship, horsemanship, fairness, compassion and respect for their horse and their peers." Additionally, the honoree must demonstrate leadership and dedication to the future of equestrian sport.

Sixteen-year-old Newman, who is a top junior rider in the hunter, jumper, and equitation rings, has excelled at the most prestigious horse shows in the nation. In 2007, the young rider triumphed at the CN North American Junior and Young Riders' Championships in Lexington, VA, where she won the esteemed individual gold medal. She had just participated in her first grand prix a few weeks earlier, where she finished with an impressive fifth place ribbon.

After the Iris McNeil Trophy presentation, Newman commented, "I didn't expect this. It's been a really great year, and it's nice to end with this award. I had such a good year, and I think it was because of the horses that I have." She continued, "I really learned from the experiences I had with them, especially Costa Sur. After I did the grand prix, even if I hadn't done so well, it really helped boost my confidence. It was a much higher level than I had ever done, and it made everything seem so much easier after - I felt I could actually do well. This was definitely my best year so far."

Some of her other major past wins include the Virginia Horse Shows Association (VHSA) Medal, Grand Pony Champion at the Devon Horse Show, and High Junior Jumper Champion at The Hampton Classic. She also competed this winter at the indoor final competitions, which included the USEF/Pessoa National Hunter Seat Medal Finals in Harrisburg, PA, and the ASPCA Maclay Finals in Syracuse, NY.

Originally from Virginia, her family relocated to Wellington, FL, last year. Newman and her parents, Kathy and Gerry, now reside at their Florida-based family farm, Allwyn Court, and return to Virginia for hunter/jumper competitions.

On the weekend of Dec. 1-2, Newman flew up for the Virginia Horse Show Association (VHSA) convention. At the convention, Newman was surprised by being presented with the Frances Newbill Rowe Award. "I didn't know I won the award until they announced it at the dinner!" said Newman. "That award was really special because it wasn't just based on my riding. It was sort of based on everything, and that made it really special. I got to go to the convention, which was nice because I got to see all the people I used to see all the time." She added, "Also, it was great because my small pony, Pony Dot Com, was VHSA Reserve Champion Small Pony of the Year with Emma Shure. Dot was also awarded the Mary Drury Perpetual Trophy."

Newman will compete in the hunters, jumpers, and equitation at the 2008 Winter Equestrian Festival. In addition to showing the horses at Allwyn Court, she will catch-ride horses for other riders and trainers.
