Katherine Newman Tallies Junior Hunter Tricolors at Middleburg Classic

Upperville, VA - September 23, 2008 - Allwyn Court's Katherine Newman secured top ribbons last week at the Middleburg Classic Horse Show in Upperville, VA. The 17-year-old rider competed in the junior hunter divisions aboard Just Jack, Last Laugh, and All The Answers. Newman trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry, at their Florida-based hunter/jumper show stable.

In the Small Junior 16-17 Hunters, Newman showed Just Jack for Annie Frazier and Pinecroft LLC. The pair competed together for the very first time this weekend, and they executed beautifully polished rides. Newman guided him to two first place finishes over fences, as well as two seconds over fences and fourth place under saddle. Their consistent ribbons combined for the overall division championship.

"I had a great week! It was my first time riding Just Jack, and he is really cool to ride," said Newman. "He has a great jump. He's a very sweet horse and tries hard. I also rode Last Laugh because his normal rider wasn't at the show. It was my first time riding him too. He was really simple; I just rode him with a loop in the reins."

Last Laugh, owned by Jaclyn Osterstock, competed with Newman in the older Small Juniors as well. Together they took home first in the stake, first in the handy hunter class, second and fourth over fences, and third under saddle. They finished with the reserve championship ribbon.

In the Large Junior 16-17 Hunter division, Newman rode All The Answers for Sherri Crawford. The duo came away with two second place ribbons and three fifths.

"All The Answers hadn't shown since Kentucky," Newman explained. "I thought he was going to be too fresh, but he went really well both days. I feel really comfortable on him now that I know him. I'm excited to show him at Capital Challenge."

She noted, "The show ring was hard at first because the juniors were moved to the schooling area, which is small and up and down hills. After the first few times in the ring, I got used to it, but it was a change from the big rings I've been showing in all year."

Katherine Newman will compete next at the Capital Challenge Horse Show. She will show in the equitation classes over the weekend and compete in the hunter and jumper divisions later in the week. In the fall, she will compete in Harrisburg, PA, Washington D.C., and Syracuse, NY.
