Consistency Pays Off for Katherine Newman in Junior Hunters at Winter Equestrian Festival

Wellington, FL - April 1, 2008 - This past week Katherine Newman of the hunter/jumper farm Allwyn Court rode for consistent ribbons at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival. The 17-year-old rider received high placings in the junior hunter divisions aboard several catch-rides. Newman resides in Wellington, FL, and trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry. She competes in the equitation, hunter and jumper divisions.

In the Large Junior 16-17 Hunters, Newman showed Zenith for trainers Jay Matter and Dee Thomas. On the first day of competition, Newman earned scores of 85 and 84 over fences, coming home with fourth and second place ribbons, respectively. They also took second place in the under saddle class. The following day, Newman and her mount scored a high mark of 87 and came away with top honors. The pair also won the yellow ribbon in the second over fences class of the day after they received a score of 84.

Newman competed aboard Zenith in the Junior Hunter Classic and finished in the tenth position, and they also finished up their weekend by winning the reserve championship in the older Large Juniors.

She showcased Day Dream and Sirius Black in the Small Junior 16-17 Hunters and accrued ribbons as well. Day Dream, owned by Mimi Abel-Smith, jogged for third place after scoring an 85 over fences. Additionally, the duo took home an eighth over fences and a seventh under saddle.

"I showed Sirius Black for Christina Gellos and her trainer Molly Flaherty," commented Newman. "He was great. We were excited to get the win over fences with a great score of 87, and he was also fourth, fourth, and sixth."

In the jumper ring, Newman piloted Gemini De Terlong in the Low Junior Jumpers for trainer Ellie Raidt. Gemini De Terlong is owned by Liza Mckee-Cole. "Gemini was very good in the classic," said Newman. "We weren't quite fast enough, but she was double clear and finished in sixth place. She was a lot of fun to ride."

Newman competes throughout the year at nationally-ranked competitions. She will continue to show at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, and will then travel to shows in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
