Katherine Newman Merits Wins Aboard Catch-Rides at CN Winter Equestrian Festival

Wellington, FL - March 25, 2008 - Katherine Newman of the Wellington-based farm Allwyn Court rode for top ribbons this past week at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival. As an up-and-coming young rider, Newman enjoys catch-riding horses for other owners and trainers in order to gain more experience in the show ring. She successfully guided catch-rides to high placings this past week at the competition.

Sixteen-year-old Newman piloted Snappy for Katherine Arliss and trainer Jeffery Welles in the Low Junior Jumpers. "Except for the rain on Sunday, my week went pretty well," smiled Newman. "I was third in the speed class on Saturday, and I was also double clear in the classic with her. We finished in third place, so that was exciting. Snappy is only seven years old and is still a little bit green, but she's a blast to ride."

In the Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) Equitation class, she showed Almelo, a hunter owned by Mimi Abel-Smith. She scored an 87 in the WIHS Jumper Phase and received an impressive score of 89.5 in the WIHS Hunter Phase, which resulted in a third place finish for her overall.

On Thursday and Friday, the young rider competed in the $50,000 International Hunter Derby, which is a challenging event that was created by the United States Hunter Jumper Association High Performance Hunter committee. These high performance hunter derbies require exhibitors to compete over natural obstacles and elements such as coops, stone walls, ditches, brush and gates.

"The first round was on Thursday, and the top 25 came back for the second round on Friday night," explained Newman. "I was 24th after the first round, so I just made it back. My second round was better," she noted. "My scores were in the 80s, so I was tenth in the second round. I was able to move up to tenth place overall! That was my first time ever doing a class like that, and it was really fun. Almelo was perfect. I might do the derby that is going to be in Naples in April and hopefully the one that is at Devon."

Newman trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry Newman, and competes throughout the year at nationally-ranked competitions. She will continue to show at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, and will then travel to shows in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
