Katherine Newman Catch-Rides Nairobi to Championship Honors at WEF

Wellington, FL – March 27, 2007 – This past weekend, Katherine Newman of Allwyn Court continued her winning ways at the Littlewood Spring I Horse Show. After a long Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) season at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club, 16-year-old Newman is still going strong, and her catch-rides aboard Nairobi resulted in another tricolor for Allwyn Court.

Newman, who trains with her parents Kathy and Gerry Newman at their farm in Wellington, piloted Nairobi in the Large Junior 16-17 Hunters for Morgan and Nora Thomas and owner Kimberly Wang.

“We won two firsts, a second, and a fifth over fences, as well as second in the hack,” smiled Newman. “We ended up champion, which was really exciting for me because it was my first week showing him.”

She also catch-rode a horse named Undercover for the first time in the Small Junior 16-17 Hunters. Newman and Undercover, owned by Gary Duffy, received second, fourth, fifth and seventh over fences. They were also sixth in the under saddle class.

Newman is often seen showing in the Junior or Pre-Green Hunters on new mounts. “Getting to ride and show other people’s horses is a great opportunity to learn more,” she has said about catch-riding. “It really teaches me a lot about riding, and it’s challenging to ride a horse I don’t know that well. I love doing it because I get more experience in the show ring.”

She also competes in the Junior Jumpers with her horse Costa Sur, and she frequently shows horses owned by Mimi Abel-Smith. Recently Newman won ribbons in the Juniors at WEF with Sarah Ward’s horse Onassis and Agincourt, owned by Dunwalke LLC. In addition, she earned ribbons with Chop Chop and Alaska for owners Nora and Morgan Thomas, Almelo, Forever Blue, and Daydream for Abel-Smith, and Tracey Topping’s jumper Espoire du Fief 111.

Allwyn Court will continue to show at the Littlewood Horse Shows and plans to attend competitions in Kentucky, Spruce Meadows, Devon, Upperville, Lake Placid, Washington D.C., Harrisburg and Syracuse in 2007.
