Katherine Newman Guides Zenith to CN Winter Equestrian Festival Circuit Championship

Wellington, FL - April 8, 2008 - Katherine Newman joined the winner's circle once again last week at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival, and the 17-year-old rider was honored with the circuit championship for the Large Junior 16-17 Hunter division. Newman earned the award for her consistent success aboard Zenith, a horse she showed for Jay Matter and Dee Thomas. The young rider resides in Wellington, FL, at her family farm Allwyn Court. She trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry.

"This past week went very well," commented Newman. "I showed Zenith, and he was reserve champion. He won first, second, and three fourth place ribbons. He was also circuit champion!" she smiled, "I didn't even show him every week of circuit, but when he did show he was great!"

She also showed Lifetime Guarantee for Liza Mckee-Cole in the older Small Junior Hunters. "I had never shown him before, but we won the handy hunter class. He was really fun and simple to ride," said Newman. In the jumper ring, she piloted Gemini De Turlong, also owned by McKee-Cole, and the pair moved up to the Medium Junior Jumpers. "She was very, very good," mentioned Newman. "She was sixth on Thursday. I made a mistake in the classic and she had a rail, but we were still ninth."

After the competition in Wellington, Newman traveled to Naples, FL, for the USHJA International Hunter Derby. At the derby she showed Almelo for owner Mimi Abel-Smith. The derby was held on a large grass field at Wrenwood Farms, and the class featured two rounds over beautiful natural jumps. The course's challenging track included a grass rolltop, wooden coops, post and rails, and a table top bank.

"My scores in the first round of the derby were 80 and 89, which put me in sixth," Newman said. "When I went back for the handy hunter round, I overrode the first jump, and Almelo knocked one of the blocks off of the wall. One judge didn't see it and they gave me an 88 plus 7, but the other did and gave me a 45. I finished eleventh in the handy class and eighth overall. It was really great because it was in a big field with nice jumps. I had a lot of fun, and Almelo liked it too!"

Newman will show next at the Littlewood Horse Shows, and Allwyn Court will compete over the summer at the Kentucky Horse Shows, Devon Horse Show, the Upperville Colt and Horse Show, and the Lake Placid Horse Shows.
