St Publishing Launches Keeneland Newspaper
Equestrian News Release
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Maryland-based ST Publishing, Inc. launched its third
newspaper today with the first edition of The Special at Keeneland. The
tabloid will cover the 2006 spring Thoroughbred meet at Keeneland this month
with five editions planned -- April 7, April 14, April 18 (the day of the
Keeneland 2-year-old sale), April 21 and April 26.
The Keeneland newspaper comes in response to ST's popular Saratoga Special,
which has established a niche with Thoroughbred horsemen and fans as a daily
during the six-week summer race meet in New York. Keeneland's three-week
spring meet, held in what many consider to be Thoroughbred racing's capital
city Lexington, is a peer to Saratoga in terms of quality and prestige. The
Grade I Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (April 15) highlights the meet as a key
Kentucky Derby prep.
"We are excited about The Special at Keeneland -- it's one more way for us
to reach readers and do the kind of journalism we like to do," said Sean
Clancy, co-founder of ST with his brother Joe. "Longterm, we would like to
publish more frequently but this is a great way to start. Response has been
great on all sides and we look forward to a good meet."
The Special will include news and feature articles, entries and
handicapping, sales coverage, columns and the popular "Here and There"
section of news and notes from around the track. The first edition included
previews of upcoming stakes at Keeneland, a look at the track's acclaimed
gift shop, visits with top trainers and jockeys and more. The newspaper will
be available complimentary throughout the Lexington area and on-track at
Keeneland. The ST Internet site http://www.st-publishing.com will also carry
frequent updates.
The Special at Keeneland follows Steeplechase/Eventing Times and The
Saratoga Special in the ST stable of publications, owned by the Clancy
brothers. The Clancys have a long history in Thoroughbred racing via their
father Joe, a former trainer. Sean rode steeplechase races professionally
for 13 seasons, winning the national championship in 1998, while Joe was
assistant trainer in his father's barn for several years. The University of
Delaware graduates parlayed the horse background with Joe's journalism
experience (sports editor of two newspapers prior to starting ST) to create
the new company in 1994 with the creation of Steeplechase Times, a newspaper
covering American steeplechase racing. The Saratoga Special came on board in
2001, was followed by the Thoroughbred Racing Calendar in 2004 and now the
Keeneland publication. In addition to its publications, ST has a
graphic-design department and a specialty products division.
