Keeneland Sets Record $1.75 Million at Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale

A Mineshaft filly who worked an eighth of a mile in :9.3, a world-record equaling time for a juvenile auction work at that distance, brought a record bid of $1.75 million from B. Wayne Hughes at Keeneland April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale on April 17, 2007.

Hughes broke his own record with the $1.75 million purchase, the highest price paid for a filly at the April Sale. In 1999, he went to $1.25 million to acquire Lochlin Slew, the previous filly record. She also becomes the third-highest priced juvenile sold at the April Sale, ranking just behind the $3.3 million paid for Chekhov and the $2 million for La Salle Street, both colts purchased by D.L. OByrne in 2004 and 1999, respectively.

"She has great talent, shes a beautiful filly, and we like her sire. She had everything we were looking for," said Seth Semkin, racing manager for Hughes, who owns Spendthrift Farm near Lexington. "I dont know if Ive ever seen a filly Ive liked better in any of the years Ive been going to these sales. Were very happy to have her; shes such a striking individual."

Semkin said the filly, out of the Forty Niner mare Stylist Talent and consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, will be sent to trainer Richard Mandella in California. He noted that her world record work over Keenelands Polytrack during the first Preview Day was a further positive factor given the synthetic racing surfaces in California.

"We were delighted to sell a record filly," said Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. "Mr. Hughes is a long-time supporter of this sale, and were very pleased he got her. Also, our thanks to Randy (Hartley) and Dean (De Renzo) for consigning this very special filly."

Keeneland sold 82 horses for $16,637,000, an average of $202,890 and a median of $155,000. Last year, 87 horses sold for $18,440,000, for an average of $211,954 and a median of $150,000 at this weeks sale.

"This sale reflects the dynamics of the two-year-old market; its the highest risk/highest reward segment of our industry," Russell continued. We had a good cross-section of buyers, but we were probably missing a top colt. We had several we perceived as top colts that didnt get to the sale."

The April Sale was the first juvenile auction in North America to utilize a synthetic surface for its under tack shows, and Russell noted that response was positive from horsemen.

"We are very pleased," he said. "The Polytrack is safe, sound and fast and horses can bounce right out of it. Thats the most important factor to Keeneland that horses came out well following their works over the Polytrack. We want these horses to be able to go on to trainers in good condition."

A colt by Mr. Greeley out of the stakes-winning mare Crusie, by Country Light, attracted the days second-highest bid of $600,000 from Centennial Farms. Consigned by Kirkwood Stables, agent, the colt worked a quarter-mile in :21 on the first Preview Day.

Jerry Frankel went to $525,000 to acquire a colt from the family of 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor. By Hussonet out of the Argentine stakes winner Reina Victoriosa (ARG), the colt is a half-brother to stakes winners More Than Regal and Ready Ruler. Consigned by Wavertree Stables Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), agent, the colt worked an eighth in :10, among the fastest times on the first Preview Day.
