Kelly Tropin Triumphs in Pessoa/USEF Medal Class

Zazou Hoffman and Littlefoot Win ASPCA Maclay Class

Wellington, FL – March 16, 2007 – Sudden thunderstorms put a damper on showing this afternoon, although several of the rings on the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club show grounds were nearing the end of their classes.

Kelly Tropin of New Canaan, CT, piloted her own Stoney Creek to the blue ribbon and the medal in “A” section of the Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Medal class, presented by Becker College. Tropin was one of four riders invited back to test and proved herself worthy of the challenge. However, Emma Lippman opted not to return and only three riders were tested. The test included a turn-on-the-haunches to the left, counter canter to one fence and a hand gallop.

“He’s amazing!” Tropin said of her horse, which she’s been riding for about a year. “This is my second Florida with him, and we’ve started getting it together. I only started showing him in the equitation three or four weeks ago. He’s been wonderful so far. It’s been really consistent, and I’ve been really happy with how it’s going.”

She continued, “I train with Peter Lutz, and this is especially great because this is my last weekend training with him. He’s going on, so it’s really exciting to win.” The win qualifies Tropin for the R.W. Mutch Equitation Classic, which will be held on Sunday, March 18, and she added that she was looking forward to riding in the class.

“I couldn’t believe that I actually did it and won, in the last class of the day. In the test, I thought that I was a little deep to the second jump, and I thought that the test was hard. I’m really happy with it and our performance, but there is still more to work on, which is nice,” Tropin explained. In addition to celebrating her win, she also celebrated her sixteenth birthday yesterday.

Taking second place in Section “A” was Callie Seaman, and Maria Schaub rounded out the top three.

Zazou Hoffman rode her veteran partner Littlefoot, owned by Missy Clark of North Run, to victory in Section “A” of the ASPCA Maclay. The pair has had extensive experience together having won the qualifying event in Region 1 in September of 2006 for the ASPCA Maclay National Championships. Although Hoffman lives in California, she competes in Florida and on the East coast with Clark, her trainer.

“Littlefoot is a 9-year-old gelding. He’s been coming along really well,” Hoffman explained. “Hardin Towell won Washington finals on him last year, and the horse is just really great. I’ve been riding him for about two years now and he’s a cool horse to ride.”

The final week of WEF marks Hoffman’s third week of showing, and in previous weeks, she and Littlefoot earned various top ribbons in the Medal, Maclay and Washington classes. “We were kind of everything but first,” she said. “Today, he was really good. He was perfect in the Maclay, and in the Medal, he was good, but I wasn’t that good.”

In addition to the equitation ring, Hoffman said she is branching out into the jumpers as well with a horse owned by Kelly Harmel, Espina de Manoir. She has competed the mare for two weeks in the Low Junior Jumpers. As far as her goals are concerned, Hoffman said that she’ll play it by ear.

“I really want to do Young Riders and maybe USEF Prix de States and get more into the jumpers, and of course, all the medal finals. I’ll just kind of go with the flow,” she commented.

Jennifer Watters and Opportunity jumped to second place in Section “A.” In Section “B” of the ASPCA Maclay, Maya Bluestone brought home the blue ribbon with Archie, and Chelsea Moss earned second place with Logan.

Hunter competition will resume tomorrow morning. Division championships that will be pinned include the Over 35 Amateur-Owner Hunters, 51 & Older Adult Amateur Hunters and the 16-17 Large Junior Hunters.
